Comprehensive Penn State Sports Roundup: May 8 To May 21
With the spring semester officially over, there are a few teams still wrapping up their seasons before all goes silent as we patiently await the beginning of football and fall sports.
Let’s take a closer peek at how Nittany Lion sports teams performed over the last two weeks.
Baseball
Despite multiple chances to end its losing streak, Penn State continued to struggle over the past few weeks within a slew of away games. The Nittany Lions were defeated 16-3 by the hand of Omaha in seven innings on May 10.
Penn State stayed in the Midwest for three games against Nebraska from May 12 to 14. The Nittany Lions dropped all three matchups with scores of 19-5, 5-2, and 8-5, respectively.
In a highly anticipated matchup with Pitt, Penn State headed to Pittsburgh to play at PNC Park on May 16. Despite the lavish backdrop within PNC Park, the location seemingly gave Pitt a home-field advantage, which was evident as Penn State was defeated 11-3 by the Panthers.
Finally, it was time for the Nittany Lions to return home. In their final series of the season, the team faced No. 20 Maryland for three games from May 18 to 20. The first game resulted in a close 17-15 loss for Penn State, but the second game finally snapped the losing streak with a 5-3 win.
Ahead of the Nittany Lions’ single-game victory, Penn State baseball head coach Rob Cooper announced his resignation from the program following the completion of the 2023 season. A national search for a new head coach is already underway.
The Nittany Lions wrapped up their season with a 7-4 loss to Maryland and a 25-25 overall record.
Softball
There was only one thing on the agenda for Penn State softball these past few weeks: the Big Ten Tournament. The Nittany Lions took down Michigan 3-2 in the first round on May 10 and moved on to the tournament quarterfinals. Although it held a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning, Penn State fell to Indiana by way of ninth-inning heroics from the Hoosiers. A close 5-4 loss ended the Nittany Lions’ season with an overall record of 31-16.
Men’s Lacrosse
In the first round of the NCAA Tournament on May 14, Penn State narrowly defeated Princeton 13-12, propelling it to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal round brought an equally close matchup with Army, and the Nittany Lions manufactured a 10-9 win following a late-game comeback from the Black Knights.
Penn State will face Duke in the semifinal round at noon on Saturday, May 27, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Women’s Lacrosse
The women’s lacrosse team wrapped up its season after falling to Stony Brook 12-8 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions finished with a record of 11-7.
Track & Field
Penn State traveled to Indiana for the Big Ten Championships on May 13, and the team posted a handful of impressive performances. Faith DeMars took home first place in the 5,000-meter run, while countless others took home top-three finishes. Overall, the team finished in sixth place.
At the NCAA Championships, which begin on May 24, Penn State will be represented by 30 individual athletes and one relay team.
Men’s Golf
Following three days of competition at the first National Golf Invitational in Arizona, the Nittany Lions climbed the leaderboard and finished tied for second place by just one stroke.
Women’s Golf
The women’s golf team was also invited to Arizona for the women’s National Golf Invitational. Out of a total of 10 teams, the Nittany Lions emerged victorious. Though the team didn’t see any postseason play, this proved to be a nice way to cap off a great season.
