State College To Host Pride Weekend Events Beginning June 9

Update, June 9:

Due to poor air quality conditions in Centre County as a result of Canadian wildfires, the Fun Fair in Sidney Friedman Park will be relocated to the State College Municipal Building at 243 S. Allen St.

Saturday’s Pride Parade and Festival will take place as planned.

Original Story:

It’s June and that means Pride Month is upon us.

Downtown State College has organized its annual, fun-filled Pride Weekend for those looking to make the most of the month. Events will begin on Friday, June 9, and run until Sunday, June 11.

Friday, June 9 — Fun Fair in Sidney Friedman Park

From 4 to 8 p.m., the Pride events in Happy Valley will kick off at the Fun Fair with music, magic, face painting, and more in Sidney Friedman Park.

Attendees can create a Pride streamer-shaker at The Makery at Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza, see Tempest Productions’ “Reading the Rainbow,” or watch Adam Swartz Puppets perform with the opportunity for a special meet-and-greet.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Centre County LGBTQA Support Network.

More information about the complete list of activities during Pride Weekend’s Fun Fair kickoff is available online for all interested attendees.

Saturday, June 10 — Pride Parade and Pride Festival

Starting at 3 p.m., the State College area will begin its acclaimed Pride Parade. The route will take participants on a tour of the State College area, beginning at State High and ending in Sidney Friedman Park.

Interested attendees must have already registered online to participate but all are invited to set up along the parade route and cheer on the event.

A festival will follow the parade at 4:30 p.m. in Sidney Friedman Park. There will be live music from Anchor&Arrow and a DJ and food trucks. Vendors will include State College staples like Classic Cones and Juana’s Venezuelan Cafe, as well as other vendors like Auntie Anne’s and Brazilian Munchies.

A portion of proceeds from food truck vendors will benefit the Centre County LGBTQA Support Network.

Other Pride Weekend Events

Throughout the weekend, Downtown State College will also host a series of other events for those attending Pride festivities, too. Some of these events include:

  • 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 9 — Penn State Alumni reception at The Lobby
  • 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9 — “The Producers” showing at the Mishler Theater in Altoona
  • 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 — 21+ Pride After Party, location TBA
  • 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 11 — Pride Alleycat Bike Race

The State College Pride schedule is available online for the full list of events taking place in addition to the Fun Fair and Pride Parade during the weekend.

All Month — Storefront Decorating Competition

Across Downtown State College, local businesses are decorating their storefronts in honor of Pride Month for the chance to claim the title of the best-decorated storefront.

Local businesses participating in the competition include Appalachian Outdoors, Lions Pride, The State Theatre, and The Waffle Shop, to name a few.

The public is encouraged to stop by participating businesses to grab a map of all the windows, check out other Pride displays, and scan the QR code on the storefront to vote for their favorite display.

The full list of participating businesses participating in the competition is available online. Happy voting!
