Penn State Men’s Soccer Names 2023 Team Captains

Penn State men’s soccer has a new pair of leaders at the helm, as Peter Mangione and Femi Awodesu were named its 2023 team captains Saturday.

Mangione will return for his second year as a captain heading into his senior season.

A forward from Hunt Valley, Maryland, Mangione has been a consistent force for the Nittany Lions since his freshman debut. Mangione registered six goals and six assists through 10 starts as a freshman during Penn State’s shortened 2020 season.

From there, the forward has remained in the starting lineup and recorded seven and eight goals in his sophomore and junior seasons, respectively, while tacking on another six assists. Nine of Mangione’s 21 career goals have served as game-winners for the Nittany Lions, too.

Awodesu, who holds down Penn State’s backline at center defender, earned 43 starts through 47 appearances since his freshman year. The Philadelphia native has also notched three goals and one assist in his 3,826 minutes played in blue and white since 2020.

Moreover, Awodesu was named to the All-Big Ten second team following the 2022 campaign.

Penn State will begin its 2023 season in August under head coach Jeff Cook in his fourth season leading the program. The group finished its 2022 season with a 6-6-4 record and a first-round loss to Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament.
