Penn State Hires Mike Gambino As Next Baseball Head Coach
Penn State baseball got its guy.
Former Boston College baseball head coach Mike Gambino will take over the Nittany Lions’ baseball program, the university announced Monday morning. Gambino will serve as the 15th head coach in program history.
“I am thrilled to welcome Mike and his family to Happy Valley as our new baseball coach,” Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft said in a release. “We worked with Mike at Boston College and know how he grows a program to find success on a national stage. Mike guided BC to the best season in program history this past season, which is impressive in a conference with historical baseball success like the ACC. Mike is a tremendous teacher and has a track record for developing players’ skills to prepare them for the next level. He has an impressive 33 Major League Draft picks in his first 12 years as a head coach. We are excited to have Mike, Jill, and their children, Sonny and Callahan, as part of our State College community.”
Gambino will rejoin Kraft in Happy Valley after the two overlapped in Chestnut Hill from 2020 to 2022. Gambino, a Garrison, New York, native, spent 13 seasons at Boston College and compiled five recruiting classes that ranked within the country’s Top 60 by Perfect Game.
He most recently put together a 37-20 season and 16-14 record within the ACC in 2023. Gambino and the Eagles engineered 12 ranked wins and spent 12 weeks in the D1 Baseball Poll this season.
Gambino currently ranks No. 2 in program history wins and helped the university to two NCAA Regional appearances and an NCAA Super Regional appearance.
Before spending 13 years at his alma mater, Gambino served as an assistant coach for four seasons at Virginia Tech. Prior to that, he spent two years as a scout for the Detroit Tigers and worked as an assistant coach at Boston College from 2003 to 2005.
Throughout Gambino’s collegiate career in Chestnut Hill, the infielder recorded a career batting average of .313 along with 22 doubles, eight home runs, 87 RBIs, and 117 runs. He also rostered within the Boston Red Sox minor league system for two years following his graduation from Boston College.
Gambino will take over the program following the announcement of Rob Cooper’s departure in May. Cooper served as the head coach of the Nittany Lions for 10 years and registered a career 197-269 record at the helm.
