Penn State Field Hockey Names 2023-24 Captains

Carly Gannon, Mackenzie Allessie, and Brie Barraco were named Penn State field hockey’s team captains for the 2023-24 season, the team announced Friday.

The three captains and the remainder of the Nittany Lions will begin their upcoming campaign in one week against Virginia at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 25, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Gannon, a senior forward and midfielder, has a career total of three goals and six points throughout her time with the Nittany Lions. A Havertown, Pennsylvania, native, Gannon played in every game for the blue and white as a junior and has been recognized on the Academic All-Big Ten team for the last three seasons.

Fifth-year senior Allessie is not only a Penn State field hockey star, but regular with the U.S. National Team. She’s earned call-ups at the national level in 2019 and 2022 and received a first-team All-Big Ten nod following her 2022 senior season. Allessie has been a consistent starter for the previous two years and has 21 goals and 30 assists throughout her Nittany Lion career so far.

Goalkeeper Barraco has been a force in the net since 2019 through a total of 75 games. She has a career save percentage of .749 and, most recently, registered a .791 save percentage last season. Barraco only allowed 24 goals in 2022, tallying a 1.54 goals-against average.

Under head coach Lisa Bervinchak Love, the Nittany Lions will continue to improve upon their dominant 17-4 overall record and 7-1 conference season. Penn State’s 2022 season came to an end at the hands of North Carolina in NCAA Tournament Final Four.
