Two Penn State Women’s Soccer Defenders Earn Weekly National, Big Ten Awards

Penn State women’s soccer senior defenders Eva Alonso and Kate Wiesner secured big awards on the national stage.

Alonso was named to TopDrawerSoccer’s National Team of the Week, while Wiesner earned the Big Ten Co-Defender of the Week distinction.

Both Nittany Lions helped pave the way to the team’s strategic 4-0 defeat of Maryland. The win clinched the team three points on the league table.

Alonso’s placement on the nation’s top weekly team comes in part due to her valiant effort in assists. The senior tallied three assists in the team’s four-goal outing and became the 15th Nittany Lion in Penn State women’s soccer history to achieve that feat. She’s currently ranked 23rd nationally in assists.

Wiesner dominates not only the defensive line but can step into offensive space as well. Her crucial goal in the game against Maryland is now the fifth of her Penn State career. Her defensive performance contributed to the sixth shutout of the 2023 season.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Piscataway at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, to face Rutgers. Folks can tune in to the game on BTN+.
