Penn State To Host Fourth Consecutive ‘Swipe Out Hunger’ Campaign

Non-profit Swipe Out Hunger is partnering with Penn State to combat food insecurity during National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week from November 11 to 18.

According to the results of Penn State’s 2022 Food and Housing Needs Survey, around 24% of students have reported trouble securing food daily on the University Park campus, and 28% of survey participants reported losing weight due to food insecurity.

An extension of Penn State’s Lion’s Pantry and Commonwealth food pantries, Swipe Out Hunger intends to provide an additional university-wide resource to any struggling students.

Penn State students are encouraged to donate $1, $5, $10, or $15 when paying for meals at any residential dining hall facility or through mobile ordering. The proceeds will be used to support the Penn State Emergency Fund, which provides financial support for students.

In spring 2023, Swipe Out Hunger raised over $34,000 in donations.

“This week is important to raise awareness for such a vital issue and cause,” University Park Director of Residential Dining Jim Meinecke said. β€œIt’s also amazing to see our students being so selfless and helping one another.”

For those struggling with food or housing insecurity, contact Penn State Student Affairs or fill out the Basic Needs Request Form with immediate needs.
