Penn State Women’s Soccer Alum Sam Coffey Scores First International Goal

Coffey was brewing in Texas Tuesday night.

Penn State women’s soccer alum Sam Coffey scored her first international goal for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in a Tuesday night friendly against China in Frisco, Texas.

Coffey scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute off a jumbled set piece with service from Jenna Nighswonger and an assist from Emily Sonnett.

“I don’t score a lot of goals, so when it happens, I’ve got to celebrate,” Coffey said postgame. “I don’t even remember what I did. It was just one of the best moments of my life.”

The former Penn State midfielder was named the USWNT’s Bud Light Woman of the Match after garnering 34.3% of fan votes, too.

In a true perfect storm match for the Nittany Lion, Coffey scored on the same night Penn State women’s soccer alum Ali Krieger was honored by the USWNT for her career ahead of kickoff.

It was Coffey’s seventh international appearance after concluding her second season with the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Coffey and the Thorns finished the season second place in league. She started in all of the team’s 23 games and recorded an 80.7% successful pass rate. During her rookie season, Coffey made 20 starts and registered a goal en route to her Rookie of the Year finalist status.

In Happy Valley, Coffey spent three seasons under head coach Erica Dambach and put together 25 goals, 30 assists, and over 5,000 minutes played on Jeffrey Field.
