Power Ranking 2023 Blue Band Halftime Shows
Oh, Beaver Stadium. We miss you so.
After closing the chapter on another 10-2 season and a 6-1 record within the confines of Happy Valley’s loveliest 107K-person stadium, it’s hard to forget the magic the Blue Band brings to gameday.
With that in mind, we decided to reminisce on all of the Blue Band’s halftime performances and power rank each week’s production from the 2023 season.
1. On Tour: Penn State vs. West Virginia
Before “karma was the guy on the Chiefs,” Swifties and football collided when the Blue Band rocked Beaver Stadium with its “On Tour” show, which featured music from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé — two artists on the biggest musical tours of the year.
This show came at the perfect time as everyone was still on their Eras and Renaissance tour highs from the summer.
The formations were all amazing, but the standout shape was the “1989” form just weeks after the announcement of “1989 (Taylor’s Version).” It felt like the pop queens were among us in Beaver Stadium as the Blue Band played “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” “Freedom,” and “Love On Top.”
2. Hip Hop: Penn State vs. Iowa
The Blue Band brought the party to Beaver Stadium for the White Out game with its Hip Hop show. The band played classic hits from artists Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Jay-Z, which had fans of all ages busting down in the stands.
The halftime show perfectly matched the energy of the game. The performance featured bangers like “California Love,” “Still D.R.E,” and “Empire State Of Mind.” The formations displayed Penn State’s creativity as the band formed a car, a boombox, and the “I Heart Hip Hop” symbol, while the sounds knocked fans’ socks off.
3. Quincy Jones: Penn State vs. UMass
You can’t go wrong with music from a legend like Quincy Jones, and the Blue Band didn’t disappoint. The music and formations were great, especially for a very rainy Homecoming.
There was at least one song everyone in the crowd enjoyed, making it an entertaining performance for all. If you’ve watched the cult classic film series “Austin Powers,” then you might have recognized the song “Soul Bossa Nova.” Jones originally released the song in 1960, which gave both the series and Beaver Stadium enough mojo to crush UMass 63-0.
4. Senior Show: Penn State vs. Rutgers
This show was bittersweet. It was Senior Day for the band, and the senior members voted on what they wanted to perform, making the show even more sentimental. The band ended up performing “Pagliacci,” “Sing, Sing, Sing,” and “Heaven,” which were all songs featured in the seniors’ previous shows.
The Blue Band also had the State College Area High School Band play with them, so it was extra special to see high school students get the opportunity to perform on a massive stage. The Blue Band is inspiring a new generation of musicians, or whatever.
5. Military Appreciation: Penn State vs. Indiana
USA! USA!
This show was not only great because it honored our troops but because the Blue Band also played classic tunes that make you proud to be an American.
The formations were awesome. The Blue Band formed the shape of the United States, the American flag, and a stick figure of Washington crossing the Delaware River.
6. Jazz Show: Penn State vs. Delaware
This performance just didn’t quite live up to the Blue Band standard. The show felt rushed and the music was tough to hear from the stands, making it a just-OK performance. The band played “Beyond the Sea,” “Moondance,” and “Unforgettable/Orange Colored Sky.”
Honestly, though, it’s hard to top a show from the week before, especially when that show is Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
7. Musical Theatre: Penn State vs. Michigan
This was a bad game to begin with, so blame Jim Harbaugh for this rating. This mashup of the arts featured “Baby One More Time/Toxic/Oops!… I Did It Again” and “I’m a Believer/America/Sweet Caroline.” The band and the theatre troupe couldn’t quite match each others’ tempos or volume, so the songs ended up sounding a little muddy. It’s clear everyone involved is incredibly talented, but this combination didn’t exactly hit.
Overall, musical theatre is the last thing anyone wants to hear when they’re getting pummeled by Michigan.
