Nittany Lions In The NFL: Wild Card Weekend Roundup

Welcome to the NFL Playoffs, folks.

College football may be in the past, but several former Penn State football players are still wrapping up their seasons in the league. With playoff victories for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans, a Nittany Lion is guaranteed a Super Bowl appearance yet again.

Penn Staters had mixed results in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, so let’s take a look at how they did.

Sean Clifford, Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys 48-32 on Sunday in a shocking upset. Sean Clifford entered the game deep into the fourth quarter, though he attempted no passes. He became the first Penn State quarterback to take a snap in an NFL playoff game since Kerry Collins in 2009.

Clifford and the Packers will head to San Francisco to take on the 49ers. The game will kick off at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, on FOX.

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Pat Freiermuth traveled to treacherous Buffalo to face the Bills in the snow. Pittsburgh lost 31-17, ending its season. Freiermuth recorded five catches for 76 yards against the Bills, finishing the season with 32 catches, 308 yards, and two touchdowns.

Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

With 45 yards and a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Chris Godwin solidified the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ win to advance to the next round of playoffs against the Detroit Lions.

The Buccaneers will face Detroit on NBC at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 21.

Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys

Micah Parsons had two tackles in the loss to the Packers, matching up with the Cowboys’ subpar performance. Parsons, who’s considered a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, finished the year with 64 tackles, 14 sacks, and one forced fumble.

Joey Porter Jr., Pittsburgh Steelers

Along with Freiermuth, Joey Porter Jr.’s season is over after a loss to the Bills. Porter suffered a concussion, forcing him to leave the field in the third quarter. The rookie finished the game with two tackles and ended the season with 43 tackles and an interception.
