An Open Letter To THON: Let The Pop Rocks Perform
Only a few things get the entire Bryce Jordan Center on its feet: THON, concerts, a court storming, and the Pop Rocks.
The story of this talented group began in gym class with a video about advanced jump rope routines. The children were fascinated and stayed persistent with their gym teacher until a team was formed. What started out as an after-school activity slowly turned into a competition squad that’s since molded into a nationwide sensation.
Originating out of Troy, Ohio, the Pop Rocks jump rope team consists of third through eighth-grade students. The Pop Rocks have performed as the halftime act at basketball games all over the country at schools like Duke, Michigan State, Ohio State, Tennessee, and for the second straight season, Penn State.
This past Saturday, during the annual THON Hoops game, the Troy Pop Rocks performed. What seemed like just another halftime quickly ignited the fans and left many shocked at the skills and choreography of these jump-rope stars.
The electrifying showcase included jumping to the beat, flips, and multiple performers jumping through the same jump rope at once.
After seeing the reaction of more than 12,000 fans during their performance on Saturday, one thing became evident: THON needs the Pop Rocks.
This wouldn’t be the first time THON featured jump ropers either. The Bucks County Bungee Jumpers were a frequent THON act throughout the 2010s and a consistent crowd favorite.
The Pop Rocks would be no stranger to the Bryce Jordan Center and have already received a small taste of the THON spirit this community holds. Why not bring them back once again? If the Pop Rocks could have this effect at a basketball game, just imagine the energy they would bring to a packed house on THON Weekend.
THON is known to have special guests and surprise performances. Bring the Pop Rocks on stage and the Bryce Jordan Center is sure to be boomin’.
