Lady Lion Tay Valladay Out For Season With ACL Tear
Penn State women’s basketball guard Tay Valladay announced she will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL and meniscus tear suffered against Minnesota on January 31.
As a graduate transfer to Happy Valley, the injury marks the end of Valladay’s collegiate career.
“Although this is the end of my collegiate career, I am incredibly grateful for the support and love from my amazing coaches, staff, teammates, and fans,” Valladay wrote. “I may not be on the court, but I will continue to be a force from the sidelines.”
Valladay began her college career at Marquette from 2019 to 2021. With the Golden Eagles, the guard appeared in 20 games off the bench as a freshman and averaged 5.2 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
After her sophomore season, Valladay transferred to Virginia and spent the next two years with the Cavaliers. She rolled right into the starting lineup and recorded a team-high 95 assists and 37 steals in 2021-22. Meanwhile, Valladay ranked No. 7 in the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio and eighth in assists per game.
The following season, the guard tallied several high-output outings, including a 22-point, eight-rebound, and seven-assist game against NC State immediately followed by a 19-point game against Duke.
In Happy Valley, Valladay averaged 10.4 points, 2.1 assists, and 24.6 minutes per game. Her season-best outing featured a 32-point game against Michigan State.
“I want to give a special shout-out to Coach Kiegs as she has been everything to me,” Valladay continued. “Coming to play for you has been life-changing and nothing short of amazing. You have believed in me from the beginning and pushed me to be the greatest you’ve always seen in me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!”
The Lady Lions will continue their campaign without Valladay against Illinois at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, at the Bryce Jordan Center.
