Penn State Wrestling’s Mitchell Mesenbrink Wins USA Wrestling Athlete Of The Week

Penn State wrestling freshman Mitchell Mesenrbrink was named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week early Wednesday afternoon, commemorating yet another week of dominance from the Cal-Baptist transfer in his debut season wrestling for the blue and white.

In his last two bouts, Mesenrbink won by a total of 30-9 and a combined four minutes of riding time.

On Friday against Iowa, No. 7 Mesenrbink upset the No. 6 ranked 165-pound All-American wrestler Michael Caliendo 12-6 in the Carver-Hawkey Arena in Iowa. Caliendo, a North Dakota State transfer, suffered just his second loss of the season at the hands of Mesenbrink.

Just days later, Mesenbrink made his Bryce Jordan Center debut when he defeated Anthony White of Rutgers with an 18-3 tech fall at the 6:52 mark. Mesenbrink joined two other teammates with bonus point victories on the way to a 35-3 victory over the fourteenth-ranked Scarlett Knights. Mesenbrink, now 17-0 and one of six undefeated Penn State wrestlers, continues to thrive in his first full year of collegiate competition.

Mesenbrink and the Nittany Lion wrestling team will be in action next when it takes on No. 5 Nebraska on Sunday, February 18, in Rec Hall. The dual will begin at 4 p.m. and be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
