Penn State To Hold Women’s History Month Events Throughout March

Various student organizations and offices across Penn State’s campuses will hold a variety of events for Women’s History Month throughout March. This year’s theme for National Women’s History Month is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion,” as declared by the National Women’s History Alliance.

Speakers, workshops, and fun events throughout the next few weeks aim to embody that theme and spark discussion.

Throughout March – Library Displays

Several locations within Pattee and Paterno Libraries will display books specifically for Women’s History Month. On the fourth floor of Paterno Library, students can also find profiles and books on various featured female scientists.

Wednesday, March 13 – “Barbie” Screening and Discussion

The Gender Equity Center, the Penn State Department of History, and the Center for Social Change and Belonging are collaborating for a screening of “Barbie” at 5:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall. Following the movie, there will be a discussion on displays of equity and inclusion in the movie and within the Barbie brand as a whole.

There will also be a photo booth, food, and a costume contest for the best Barbies and Kens. The best-dressed students will have a chance to win prizes.

Thursday, March 14 – Women’s History Month Trivia Night

The Gender Equity Center will host a trivia night at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, in HUB 008 centered on women’s history. There will be prizes up for grabs for the winners.

Tuesday, March 19 – Rhiannon Giddens with Charly Lowry

Folk musician Rhiannon Giddens will light up Eisenhower Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19. Giddens is a two-time Grammy winner and has most recently been featured as a banjo player on Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

March 22 – Women’s History Month Fun Friday

From noon to 3 p.m. in the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, students can check out displays of quotes and achievements from minoritized women. The event will incorporate local female-owned businesses and have activities such as button-making and affirmation writing.

March 25 – Women’s Night at OriginLabs

OriginLabs at the Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub will be accessible from 4 to 8 p.m. for an open-house-style event for folks to see what the space has to offer. Attendees can also take part in a laser engraving event where they can choose from a variety of notable and historic women along with an inspiring quote.
