Zion Sykes Elected UPUA Student Body President

The official results of the 2024 University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) elections are in, and Zion Sykes was elected as Penn State’s new student body president.

Sykes’ running mate, Rasha Elwakil, was also elected as part of the executive ticket, which was opposed by the Roman Bahadursingh/Jackson Carmichael ticket. Sykes and Elwakil will serve as the UPUA president and vice president for the upcoming 19th Assembly.

Sykes and Elwakil earned 63.8% of votes on Wednesday, while Bahadursingh and Carmichael earned 34.46% of the vote. A total of 3,938 students voted in this year’s election, which was 1,275 more than last year’s election.

Sykes is a junior double majoring in political science and global and international politics and hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sykes has experience as the chair of the governmental and community relations committee within the 18th Assembly. He has also served as the Borough Liaison and sits on the University Park Student Fee Board and the Academic Integrity Board for the College of Liberal Arts.

Elwakil is a sophomore majoring in earth science and policy. Elwakil is the chair of the justice and equity committee in the 18th Assembly and is heavily involved outside of UPUA. She is in Delta Phi Epsilon, the Millennium Scholars Program, the Presidential Leadership Academy, and many sustainability efforts across campus.

$15 Minimum Wage Referendum Question
