Penn State Hoops Alumni Team Wins Pittsburgh Regional At ‘The Basketball Tournament’
The Happy Valley Hoopers, a Penn State men’s basketball alumni team, are three wins away from $1 million after winning the Pittsburgh Regional of The Basketball Tournament (TBT).
The team’s journey started with an 88-77 victory over the Dubois Dream in round one. The opening matchup was an all-around effort as five Happy Valley Hoopers scored in double digits and 2022 graduate John Harrar finished the game with a double-double after tallying 11 points and 14 rebounds.
In round two, the Happy Valley Hoopers nabbed their second straight 11-point win as they beat the UConn alumni team Stars of Storrs 94-83. The Hoopers caught fire from three, shooting 43% from behind the arc including seven threes from 2022 grad Greg Lee and four three-pointers from 2021 alum Myreon Jones.
In the final of the Pittsburgh Regional, the Hoopers won a close game as they beat the Pitt alumni team Zoo Crew in an 85-82 nailbiter. The game saw great performances from Lee, 2022 graduate Sam Sessoms, and 2020 alum Curtis Jones. The three players combined for 67 of the Hoopers’ 85 points.
The Happy Valley Hoopers will take on the Eberelin Drive, who won the Butler Regional. The time and date of the game are yet to be determined.
If the Hoopers beat the Drive, they advance to the semifinals, which will be played on Friday, August 2, in Philadelphia. The championship game will be played two days later at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 4, and will be broadcast on FOX. The winner of the championship game will take home $1,000,000, while everyone else will go home empty-handed.
