Staff Picks: Movies That Should Come To State Theatre

Whether you’ve seen it on your way to Cafe 210 or decided to take COMM 150, the State Theatre is one of the most recognizable landmarks of downtown State College. One thing that the State Theatre is known for is its screenings of classic movies. This year is no different.

The State Theatre has already set up some of its movie selections for the fall, including a “Friday the 13th” double feature, a screening of “The Godfather,” and many more.

We decided to give our two cents on which movies should come to the theatre next. Check out what our staff had to say!

Mikey DeAngelis: ‘Knives Out’

Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery “Knives Out” is my favorite movie of all time. However, I feel like it doesn’t get nearly enough love. Not only is it an incredible movie, it totally fits the vibe of the autumn season, which makes this a great time of year to think about showing it on the big screen.

Joe Lister: ‘National Treasure

Folks, this is an easy selection. “National Treasure” is the greatest movie of all time. It combines action with romance and family drama. You learn a little bit about history (even if it’s all conspiracy theories), and you have an enjoyable few hours watching this film. Plus, Nick Cage gets to say, “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence.”

Joe Lister: ‘National Treasure: Book Of Secrets’

Folks, this is an easy selection. “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” is also the greatest movie of all time. It combines action with romance and family drama. You learn a little bit about history (even if it’s all conspiracy theories), and you have an enjoyable few hours watching this film. Plus, Nick Cage gets to say, “You can have the Boston tea tables.”

Nolan Wick: ‘Forrest Gump’

“Forrest Gump” is an All-American classic. If you don’t like this movie, there’s something wrong with your taste. It’s a film that simply never gets old.

Evan Halfen: ‘Monsters University’

There’s no better way to start (or end) your time in college than with a Disney blockbuster like “Monsters University,” the 2013 prequel to “Monsters Inc.”

Featuring arguably two of the most iconic animated characters, James P. Sullivan (“Sully” for short) and Mike Wazowski, the movie follows the best friends’ journey navigating through college and becoming real monsters. Sure, they hit some bumps along the way before they become the duo we all know and love, but hey, that’s college, man. The movie highlights greek life, scary professors, weird freshman-year roommates, and the party scene, perfectly embodying the college experience.

This is one of my comfort movies and is timeless in my eyes. Besides, with the movie’s theme song trending on TikTok, now’s the perfect time to show it on the big screen once again.

Dillon Williams: ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’

With the third installment of the Spider-Verse series in production limbo, now is as good a time as any to showcase “Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse” at the State Theatre. It’s a modern marvel in animation and has an easy story to follow, even if you haven’t seen the first one.

Aidan Conrad: ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’

“Everybody Wants Some!!” is one of my favorite films because it’s nothing but dudes being dudes and good vibes. This is such a college movie, and it would be very fitting for it to be played in a college town like State College.

Ashley Connington: ‘Mamma Mia!’ & ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’

Look, I’ve been on a bit of a Mamma Mia kick lately, even wanting the play to come to Eisenhower Theater. But I think State College needs to should show a double header of both Mamma Mia movies. With the rumors of a third movie in development, there is no better time to get everyone excited for some more ABBA. The “Mamma Mia!” movies are just such fun and sure, Sophie might be getting married, but she’s still just a 20-year-old girl like so many of us. State College theater, please Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! a fun night out with my friends, I’d be there in a heartbeat.
