What To Know Ahead Of Donald Trump’s Campaign Rally On Saturday

Former President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will appear at the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday as part of his presidential campaign.

Penn State’s campus will be jam-packed on Saturday, featuring Trump’s campaign, protests, heightened security, a men’s hockey game, and folks watching the Penn State football play at Wisconsin. Here’s everything you’ll need to know ahead of Saturday’s events.

The Rally

Trump’s rally is set to begin at 4 p.m., though that doesn’t necessarily mean the candidate will be on stage promptly. Doors are set to open at noon.

This will be the first time Trump stopped at Penn State on a campaign tour. Previously, his sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., have campaigned for him in State College.

Trump’s campaign stop is not the first Republican rally at Penn State over the past few weeks. Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy spoke at the Sparks Building on Thursday, October 17, and the “Team Trump Bus Tour” stopped at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday, October 22.

The Protest

Several student and non-student groups are set to protest Trump’s rally.

While protests were originally led by the People’s Defense Front and the Student Committee for Defense and Solidarity, the Central PA Trans Alliance, the Centre County Democratic Socialists, and the Pittsburgh-based Steel City Anti-Fascist League have also attached their names to the protest.

The groups plan to meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the corner of College Avenue and Garner Street in downtown State College. At 2:30 p.m., the group will march to the rally at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Security

Onward State reached out to Penn State for comment on security surrounding the event.

“It’s important to note that the Trump campaign has rented space for its event in accordance with University policies,” Penn State spokesperson Wyatt DuBois wrote. “The campaign event is not sponsored by the University or any University-affiliated group.

“The safety of our campus and all those who attend, visit, or work at Penn State is our top priority. Activity occurring with the campaign and a presidential nominee is led by the U.S. Secret Service as they would oversee the safety and security measures in place. Additional support from University Police and Public Safety as well as other state and local law enforcement agencies will be in place as needed.”

On Thursday, DuBois said the university couldn’t go into specifics for traffic adjustments.

“For security reasons, we cannot share details at this time,” DuBois wrote. “However, to maintain the safety of the event and those attending, certain security measures will be put in place that could be inconvenient. University Police are working closely with the U.S. Secret Service and other law enforcement partners on these security measures. We would encourage anyone who needs to travel to or through the area to leave extra time to reach their destination.”

Transportation & Parking

Parking requires a valid Penn State parking permit or payment of the event parking fee. Discounted prepaid parking through ParkMobile is available for Jordan East and Porter North for $11, and at Eisenhower Parking Deck for $5.50 through 11:59 p.m. on Friday or until sold out.

On Saturday, attendees without a Penn State parking permit or who have not prepaid through ParkMobile will be required to pay the day-of rate for parking at Eisenhower Parking Deck for $10 via the Honk platform, East Deck for $10 via ticket, and Jordan East and Porter North for $20 via the Honk platform.

Additional parking areas may be available, and lots will reach capacity through the morning. Attendees should follow the directions on roadside digital message boards and from traffic and parking staff for live parking information and availability.

All parking at campus lots and Eisenhower Deck is enforced using license plate recognition, and the license plate information provided with payment or registered with the Penn State permit must match the license plate of the vehicle parking at the event. Head-in parking is also required.

Due to the Penn State men’s hockey game on Saturday, the Stadium West lot will be closed until 2:30 p.m.

All cars parked in the Orange L East lot must be removed by 11:59 p.m. on Friday and the Orange L South lot will be closed all day on Saturday.

No alcohol is permitted in campus parking areas.

The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) released a statement on Friday detailing the organization’s plan to divert the Red Link’s route.

“Due to extensive road closures around the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday, 10/26, all routes except the Red Link will follow the Game Day Detour schedule all day. Please refer to the Game Day Detour schedule below,” the statement read.

“The Red Link will serve Bigler Road, Pollock Road, Shortledge Road, College Avenue, and Burrowes Road before returning to White Course Drive. No service at the Visual Arts Building or Pattee TC Westbound stops. Use the stops across Curtin Road instead.

“Please expect delays on all routes and allow additional time for your travel.”

Men’s Hockey

Penn State men’s hockey is still set for puck drop across the street from the rally. The Nittany Lions will face St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The weekend’s slate of games will also mark the first time Pegula Ice Arena sells alcohol at a Penn State Athletics event. A valid photo ID will be needed, and alcohol will be available at concession stands, portable stands, and in premium areas.
