Penn State Women’s Soccer To Open NCAA Tournament Against Stony Brook

After falling to No. 9 UCLA 1-0 in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals, Penn State women’s soccer is turning its attention to the NCAA Tournament.

No. 4-seeded Penn State will face Stony Brook in the first round of the tournament. The time and date have yet to be announced.

Stony Brook gained an automatic qualification after winning the Coastal Athletic Association. The Nittany Lions last played the Seawolves in 2019, resulting in a 3-1 victory. Penn State is 2-0 all-time against Stony Brook

Stony Brook went 14-3-3 in 2024, last losing on September 26. Its only matchup against a Big Ten opponent this season resulted in a 2-2 tie with Maryland. Penn State beat Maryland 5-0 in October.

This is the Nittany Lion’s 30th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament, dating back to 1995. It is the second-longest streak in NCAA soccer. In last season’s tournament, Penn State fell in the elite eight to top-seeded Clemson.

Penn State is 12-6-3 and 5-4-2 in the Big Ten. Excluding its loss to then No. 21 Virginia, all of Penn State’s losses were to other Big Ten teams currently in the top 20 nationally.

The Nittany Lions are 23-3 in first-round matches in the tournament. Their last and only national championship was in 2015 when top-seeded Penn State defeated third-ranked Duke in a 1-0 battle.
