Penn State Men’s Hockey To Wear Throwback Jerseys Against Wisconsin
Penn State men’s hockey will don a special throwback jersey for its matchup against Wisconsin on Friday, November 15, the team announced on Wednesday.
The alternate jerseys pay homage to the uniforms worn by the first varsity men’s hockey team during its inaugural season in 1940. The sweater is mostly white with a large navy “PS” across the chest while the pants and gloves are brown with barber-pole style navy stripes on the socks.
Three seasons after the Nittany Lions’ hockey debut, sports such as hockey, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, and golf were suspended as a wartime measure. The men’s hockey team returned in 1946 for a seven-game season, but four were canceled due to warm weather.
After the 1946 season, hockey was absent from Penn State until a petition brought the sport back as a club called the Icers in 1971. The club became a perennial powerhouse until Penn State returned with a Division I men’s team in 2013.
After Penn State dons the jersey against Wisconsin, the look will become an alternate worn by the Nittany Lions over the next few seasons.
The Nittany Lions take on Wisconsin at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 15, and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16.
