Power Ranking Ice Cream Flavors At The Creamery

One of the most beloved places at Penn State is the Berkey Creamery.

Although it makes many great products, it is most known for its famous, fresh ice cream, made right here on campus using milk from Penn State’s own dairy farm and cows.

The creamery has over 120 flavors but has a rotation of 20 flavors in the store every day. With this, we decided to go in one night and try all 20 flavors and rank them so you don’t have to.

No. 20 White Out

White Out ice cream is here to celebrate the iconic Penn State White Out. However, this flavor is a huge fumble. It tastes worse than Penn State football’s loss to Ohio State.

White Out is a buttered popcorn-flavored base with white chocolate chips. This was a huge missed opportunity.

The White Out is an electric atmosphere, so who thought of a popcorn ice cream base? Next year, just have a sweet vanilla ice cream or maybe a coconut ice cream. If the Creamery actually wants to respect the White Out, they should consider something that actually tastes like a win.

No. 19 Alumni Swirl

Alumni Swirl is very popular with older alumni, hence the name. But for the younger crowd, I don’t know anyone who would choose this flavor when there are 19 other better flavors to pick from.

Alumni Swirl is a vanilla ice cream base with Swiss mocha chips and a blueberry swirl. The Alumni Association chose blueberries so that it would be a blue-and-white dessert, but the swirl part of it is just way too tart, and it should come with a warning.

The Swiss mocha chips should tame the blueberry flavor, but it doesn’t. The flavor is supposed to be honoring the alumni that stop by the Creamery, but they could’ve done a way better flavor for them.

No. 18 Apple Cobbler Crunch

Apple Cobbler Crunch is new to the 20 flavors, and it’s a limited edition for the fall season. It’s a cinnamon apple ice cream base, with graham crunch and an apple sauce swirl. Even though the flavor is only here for a short amount of time, it needs to leave sooner.

It tastes like plain vanilla ice cream with a hint of apple. If you want to make a bold flavor, make it bold enough to taste. The “graham crunch” is a huge mystery because it was a soft ice cream with no crunch. They should’ve put big pieces of graham crackers in it because I genuinely think that there is no graham at all.

The issue isn’t that the apple cobbler ice cream is bad, it just has so much potential to be a must-try flavor, but they didn’t take advantage of it. Hopefully, the Creamery will try harder next year to deliver a great fall flavor.

No. 17 Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin Pie is also new to the 20 flavors, and it’s limited to the fall season. Pumpkin pie is a pumpkin-based ice cream with graham crunch. Luckily, this ice cream actually has a graham crunch, but I still feel like it still needs more.

The flavor is good but not great, it might need a little more pumpkin flavor in it to make it a fall favorite. This flavor is just meh.

No. 16 Peachy Paterno

Peachy Paterno is a staple flavor and very popular at the Creamery. The ice cream has a peach-flavor base with chunks of peach slices. But I don’t know what makes me more uncomfortable — the name of it or the texture of this ice cream. The name is supposed to honor former head football coach Joe Paterno, but the name “Peachy Paterno” feels very weird.

The flavor sounds like it would be great, but the texture of it is weirdly soft. It tastes like cheap yogurt that you could get in the East Dining Hall, not the consistency you would expect from the Berkey Creamery. Peachy Paterno is probably only popular for the name and not for the actual flavor itself.

No. 15 Black Raspberry Frozen Yogurt

Black Raspberry Frozen Yogurt is a low-fat, tart treat. The flavor is exactly how it is named. It’s not bad, it’s just not a go-to. It’s a little tart, but it’s definitely refreshing and a light option. However, if you don’t eat it fast enough, it turns into a soup. If the Creamery wants this to be a top-tier ice cream, it should consider adding dark chocolate chips in it to spice it up.

No. 14 Chocolate

Chocolate is a signature flavor everywhere. The Creamery does it very well, given it’s both rich and creamy. But at the same time, it’s very plain. If you’re craving chocolate ice cream, this one is great. But if you’re craving something to wow you, grab something else. Why not just drink the Creamery chocolate milk instead?

No. 13 Cherry Sorbet

Cherry Sorbet is a non-dairy frozen dessert that the creamery offers. The texture of it is very good — not too icy, not too soft. The taste is very tart, which isn’t a bad thing. But some could compare this cherry flavor to cough syrup. For this being the only non-dairy dessert out of the 20 options, the Creamery could do better for folks with dietary restrictions.

No. 12 Grilled Stickies

Grilled Stickies are a staple at Penn State, but did it have to become an ice cream flavor?

The Grilled Stickies ice cream has a cinnamon bun flavored base with sticky bun dough pieces and a cinnamon streusel swirl. This flavor is actually really good, but only in small helpings. It’s so sweet that anything more than just a sample size might kill your taste buds from all the sugar. After one bite, it just gets very overwhelming to the point where you need water to cleanse your palate.

No. 11 Vanilla Bean

Vanilla Bean is a flavor you can find everywhere and anywhere. When you’re feeling pretty basic or you want something to put many toppings on, a Vanilla Bean base is the best option. This ice cream is definitely not the same old plain vanilla. It has a lot of dimension in its flavor and richness to it. Some vanilla ice creams taste just like frozen milk — but this ice cream is so much more than that. This vanilla ice cream can stand on its own without adding anything to it. Vanilla Bean is a basic flavor, but it is done so right, that it is anything but basic.

No. 10 Monkey Business

Monkey Business is a silly flavor. It’s a banana ice cream base with peanut butter swirl and chocolate chips. The combo sounds pretty weird, and I typically wouldn’t crave banana-flavored ice cream out of everything else at the Creamery. The banana is not too overpowering, it blends very well with the peanut butter. The chocolate chips add a little crunch, and it all works together perfectly. At first glance, Monkey Business might be a flavor that gets skipped over, but if you’re feeling adventurous, give it a try!

No. 9 WPSU Coffee Break

WPSU Coffee Break is a great flavor even for those who don’t like the taste of coffee. The WPSU-inspired ice cream has a coffee base and chocolate chips. The coffee taste isn’t too strong or too light. The way the chocolate chips add some texture and blend into the flavor really helps the ice cream. Without the chocolate chips, the coffee base would not be good on its own.

No. 8 Butter Pecan

Butter Pecan is a timeless flavor — it’s a classic that’s been around for a while. The Creamery makes it even better. Butter Pecan is a butter almond ice cream base with thick pecans added to it. There’s a good amount of pecans throughout the ice cream, so you get a good amount of crunch in every bite.

No. 7 Cookies-N-Cream

Cookies-n-Cream is a hard flavor to mess up. It’s a vanilla ice cream base with cookie pieces in it. The Creamery does really well with this flavor, making it very creamy but still has the crunch of a cookie. This flavor is always reliable and never missed.

No. 6 Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is another very popular flavor everywhere. The flavor has a cookie dough ice cream base with cookie dough chunks and chocolate chips. The Creamery has a great ratio with this flavor and with every bite, you get a bit of something to add to the flavor.

No. 5 Bittersweet Mint

Mint chocolate chip is a flavor that’s either loved or hated. Some brands do mint wrong, making it taste like toothpaste or not putting enough chocolate chips in it. The Creamery, however, is pretty spot on with this flavor. Bittersweet Mint comes with dark chocolate chips that you can taste with every bite. This flavor is not too minty, and with the dark chocolate, it creates a refreshing, solid taste.

No. 4 Peanut Butter Swirl

Peanut Butter Swirl is a comforting, plain flavor at the Creamery. If you don’t like a lot of flavor, or a lot going on in your ice cream, this could be the right pick for you. Peanut Butter Swirl is a vanilla ice cream base with a peanut butter swirl. It’s not an overpowering flavor and feels light, making it an ice cream you could eat a whole tub of in one sitting.

No. 3 Death By Chocolate

Death By Chocolate is an iconic Creamery flavor.

It’s a chocolate ice cream base with chocolate flakes, fudge pieces, and a chocolate swirl. If you’ve ever been to the Berkey Creamery or plan on going, you have to give this flavor a try. It’s a very rich, dynamic chocolate ice cream with a different chocolatey taste in every bite. But, this is a pretty heavy ice cream so you are going to need water with it.

This ice cream will have you feeling full after a few bites, but it’s worth giving a try. Some people don’t like the flavor because it’s so much chocolate that it might kill you (it’s in the name).

No. 2 Happy Happy Joy Joy

Happy Happy Joy Joy has a coconut ice cream base with butter-roasted almonds and chocolate chips. In the ice cream, you can seriously feel the texture of the coconut, and the almonds add a nice crunch to the smooth creamy texture. It’s sweet, refreshing, and tropical. I would skip over this flavor hearing of it, but try a sample of it because it’s life-changing.

No. 1 Monster Mash

Monster Mash is a limited-edition flavor for spooky season. It’s vanilla ice cream that’s colored orange with cookie pieces and a swirl of caramel. The color might be a bit intimidating, as it’s an unnatural-looking orange color, but this is by far the best flavor at the Creamery. The caramel is all throughout the ice cream, making your taste buds dance and the cookie pieces crunch when bitten into. The Creamery needs to make this flavor year-round (just take the orange dye out when fall is over).
