Nittany Lions In The NFL: Week 15 Roundup

The NFL has wrapped up week 15 action, leaving just three more weeks of regular season play.

The Nittany Lions had a bye this past weekend as the team prepared for its first-ever College Football Playoff matchup against SMU at noon this Saturday, December 21, in Beaver Stadium. While Penn State football didn’t take the field, several alumni represented the blue and white professionally.

Let’s take a look at how those Penn State alumni fared in week 15 of the NFL season.

Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys

Linebacker Micah Parsons was disruptive in the Dallas Cowboys’ 30-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The former All-Pro selection posted an impressive stat line of four total tackles and two sacks against the Panthers.

Parsons has recorded 8.5 sacks this season, tied for 12th place amongst NFL sack leaders. An impressive feat, especially considering Parsons missed four games early in the season due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the Cowboys’ week four matchup against the New York Giants.

Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles

Running back Saquon Barkley posted a modest performance by his standards in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 27-13 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barkley rushed for 65 yards on 19 carries, averaging 3.4 yards per attempt, and hauled in two receptions for 9 yards. Barkley entered the medical tent in the first half of the contest and was sidelined for an extended period of time. After the game, reporters asked Barkley if he had sustained an injury. Barkley stated that he was “dealing with a little something,” which caused him to be sidelined.

Barkley leads the NFL in rushing with 1,688 yards on 285 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He is also in contention to break the NFL’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, held by Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson. The Eagles have three games left this season and to break the record, Barkley needs to average 139 rushing yards per game over the final three contests.

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers

Tight end Pat Freiermuth had a solid showing in the Steelers’ loss to the Eagles on Sunday, hauling in three passes for 22 yards, including a touchdown reception in the second quarter. The former Penn State tight end has been a consistent contributor for the Steelers this season, totaling 492 receiving yards, 47 catches, and six touchdowns.

Chop Robinson, Miami Dolphins

Chop Robinson was turbulent in the Dolphins’ 20-12 loss to the Texans on Sunday. Robinson recorded two total tackles and 1.5 sacks against Houston. The rookie pass rusher has five sacks, ranking fifth among rookies.

Mike Gesicki, Cincinnati Bengals

Tight end Mike Gesicki posted a solid showing in the Bengals’ 37-27 victory over Tennessee on Sunday. Gesicki hauled in three receptions for 37 yards against the Titans. In his first season with Cincinnati, he has been a solid target for Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Gesicki has caught 45 passes for 497 yards and two touchdowns as a member of the Bengals.

Brenton Strange, Jacksonville Jaguars

Tight end Brenton Strange was dominant in the Jacksonville Jaguars 32-25 loss to New York Jets. Strange hauled in 11 receptions for 73 yards, he will see an increased role in the offense due to Jaguars tight end Evan Ingram being lost for the season with a labrum injury.

Other Notables:

  • Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was busy in the Steelers’ loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Porter Jr. recorded five total tackles and defended one pass during the contest.
  • Linebacker Odafe Oweh recorded one tackle in the Baltimore Ravens’ 35-14 victory over the New York Gants on Sunday.
  • Safety Ji’Ayir Brown posted six total tackles in the San Francisco 49ers’ 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football
  • Wide receiver Parker Washington hauled in three receptions for 54 yards in the Jaguars’ loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.
