[Photo Story] Penn State Men’s Hockey vs. Notre Dame In Frozen Confines

The friendly confines of Wrigley Field welcomed Penn State in the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series.

To kick the New Year off, Penn State men’s hockey traveled to Chicago to play Notre Dame in an untraditional game at Wrigley Field. After a back-and-forth affair, an overtime, and a shootout, Notre Dame defeated Penn State in an eight-round shootout after overtime finished 3-3.

Our photographers were on the ice to capture all the action. Let’s look at some of our favorite pictures from Penn State’s road trip to Chicago.

Wrigley Field was lit up beautifully for a chilly night of January hockey.

Penn State walked to the ice for warmups about 30 minutes before game time.

Shortly after warmups, Penn State took the ice and was introduced out of the first base dugout.

After both teams took the ice, they lined up for the national anthem. The anthem provided fireworks, and an amazing start to the night.

Penn State started the game down early but quickly answered back with a goal to tie the game 1-1.

The remainder of the first period was chippy, with Notre Dame tacking on another goal.

In the second period, Penn State tied the game up with a goal by sophmore Matt Dimarsico.

As the second period concluded, the Nittany Lions walked back to the locker room to prepare for a hard-fought third period.

The third period was a battle, noting goals from both teams.

As the third period came to a close, neither team was able to break the tie. The Nittany Lions were in for an overtime shootout in Wrigley.

After eight shootout attempts, the shootout score remained tied 1-1. On Notre Dame’s next attempt, Ryan Helliwell sealed the game for the Fighting Irish, giving them the win.

As the Nittany Lions walked back to the locker room, they were cheered on by fans from the Chicago bleachers. Penn State will wrap up the series against Notre Dame at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 5.
