[Photo Story] The New Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building

Well, what do we have here?

After years of construction dating back to May 2022, the Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building has opened its doors to the public. The building is named in honor of Susan Welch, the dean of the Liberal Arts College from 1991 to 2019, who passed away in March of 2022. The 143,000-square-foot building is the first new liberal arts building at University Park in more than 50 years.

With the first week of classes underway, the building is welcoming students for their classes and other activities. Take a tour of the building through our photographer’s lens to see what the building has to offer.

Before you walk in, you’re greeted by the astounding exterior of the building. There are six floors with remarkable architecture and pristine glass windows along the front and side of the building.

When you arrive, you’re first met by a museum space where the Matson Museum of Anthropology will soon instill exhibitions. There are museum artifacts along the first floor for students to look at.

Along the main hallway, there’s seating for students to charge their electronic devices and knock out some work between classes.

As you move forward, there’s a main lobby equipped with plenty of seating options, three study rooms, and a video board lined by wooden support boards.

There are also plenty of seats by the window for students looking for a more scenic place to do their work. Through the window, students have a direct view of the Moore Building.

Transitioning to higher floors, each department of liberal arts has its own floor, all equipped with conference rooms that look out over the west side of campus.

On the fourth floor of the building, there are offices for academic advising and a whiteboard with wonderful drawings of each major within the College of Liberal Arts.

Finally, in the basement level, there’s a state-of-the-art laboratory right when you come off the elevator as well as more orange seating for students and faculty alike.

This walkthrough is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building has to offer. If you would like to visit the building for yourself, it’s located on the west side of campus next to the Keller Building.
