Katie Schumacher-Cawley Signs Contract Extension Through 2030

Penn State women’s volleyball head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley has signed a contract extension through 2030, the university announced Friday morning.

Schumacher-Cawley’s extension came after she led the Nittany Lions to a national title in her third season as the head coach.

“I am beyond thrilled and deeply honored to be a part of Penn State. Representing this incredible university, our storied volleyball program, and the passionate Penn State community is a privilege that carries profound meaning to me,” Schumacher-Cawley said in a press release. “The legacy built by those who came before us is the foundation of our success, and it is my responsibility, and our duty to uphold the tradition, pride, and relentless pursuit of excellence that defines this program.”

The championship was Penn State’s first since 2014 and eighth in program history, while Schumacher-Cawley became the first female head coach to win a women’s volleyball NCAA Tournament.

“We are excited to have Katie leading our program for years to come. She demonstrated remarkable leadership in overcoming challenges this season and served as an outstanding role model for the young women on our team,” Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft said. “Her journey has resonated with so many, inspiring those who watched her guide the Nittany Lions. Winning the 2024 NCAA Championship is a testament to the program’s rich history and the bright future ahead for Penn State women’s volleyball.”

Schumacher-Cawley led Penn State to a 35-2 season while battling breast cancer, but she announced she completed chemotherapy earlier this week.

Prior to becoming the associate head coach of Penn State in 2018, Schumacher-Cawley had head coaching stints at Illinois Chicago from 2009 to 2016 and Penn in 2017. She spent four years as the associate head coach under former Penn State head coach Russ Rose prior to taking over the program.

A two-time All-American and 1999 national champion, Schumacher-Cawley played for the Nittany Lions from 1998 to 2001 and played for the Penn State women’s basketball team in the 2001-02 season.

“The standard here is high – and rightfully so. Together, we will continue to embrace the challenge, push boundaries, and represent Penn State with pride, strength, and an unshakable commitment to excellence. I can’t imagine being anywhere else,” Schumacher-Cawley said.
