Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity Accused Of Supplying Alcohol To Underage Students

Penn State fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi has been accused of supplying three underage female students with alcohol stemming from a November 2024 incident. The fraternity faces misdemeanor counts of selling or furnishing liquor to a minor and selling or furnishing liquor or malt or brewed beverages to minors
The fraternity’s acting president, Tyler Whiteman, is appearing in court on behalf of the fraternity.
State College police spotted someone throwing up near a trashcan on East Fairmount Avenue on the morning of November 16, 2024, according to an affidavit.
Police said they believed all three female students had a strong alcohol odor while one was vomiting and was slurring her words. She agreed to a breathalyzer test and blew a .190. Another female consented to a breathalyzer test and blew a .180. The third refused to identify herself and refused a breathalyzer test.
According to the affidavit, all three females advised being served by Alpha Sigma Phi and are all members of a sorority affiliated with Penn State. Two of the women agreed to testify against the fraternity.
State College Police said they contacted the fraternity’s president, who told them he was aware of an event on the property that weekend but didn’t know the exact date. The fraternity’s social chair, who is responsible for registering events at the fraternity with the university, was no longer active to provide more information.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on March 26 at the downtown courthouse on South Fraser Street.
Alpha Sigma Phi was previously charged with furnishing alcohol to minors in 2017.
Whiteman declined comment. Penn State did not return a request for comment.
