Former Penn State Hoops Head Coach Ed DeChellis Announces Retirement

Former Penn State men’s basketball head coach Ed Dechellis announced his retirement from coaching, Navy Athletics announced Wednesday morning.
DeChellis, a Penn State graduate who played basketball for two seasons at Penn State Beaver, started his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He landed two more assistant coaching jobs at Salem University from 1984 to 1986 and once again at Penn State from 1986 to 1996.
The Monaca, Pennsylvania, native made his first head coaching stop at East Tennessee State from 1996-2003. DeChellis won two Southern Conference regular season titles and one tournament title with the Buccaneers in his time at the helm.
DeChellis departed East Tennessee State for the head coaching job in Happy Valley. He spent eight seasons coaching at his alma mater, topped off by an NIT championship in the 2008-09 season. Penn State won 27 games that year, which still stands as the program record. He also secured Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2009.
Two years later, in the 2010-11 season, DeChellis led the Nittany Lions to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years. Despite going 19-15 on the year and 9-9 in Big Ten play, Penn State secured an at-large bid to the tournament after securing a second-place finish in the Big Ten Tournament. The Nittany Lions fell to Temple in the first round. DeChellis then announced his departure from the program for the Navy head coaching job in May 2011.
DeChellis culminated his coaching career with 14 seasons leading the Midshipmen. DeChellis led the team to a Patriot League regular season title in the 2020-21 season. He also surpassed Ben Carnevale for most games coached at Navy with 426.
DeChellis ends his career as the fifth-longest tenured head coach in Division I men’s basketball at 29 years.
