Board Of Trustees Approves ‘Onward State Field At Beaver Stadium’ After $50,000,000.01 Gift

You just got one-upped, B.J. Werzyn.

On Tuesday, Penn State’s Board of Trustees confirmed a proposed naming of “Onward State Field at Beaver Stadium” to honor a $50,000,000.01 donation from the student-run blog Onward State. The Facilities and Academic Unit Naming Committee approved a 44-year contract to name the field, which would run through 2069 (HA, nice).

The motion passed at the full board by a unanimous 30-0 vote.

The donation and renaming decision comes three weeks after the Board of Trustees approved a $50 million gift from local remodeling business West Shore Home to name the stadium “West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium.” However, the Board of Trustees overruled the decision in favor of Onward State due to the one-cent higher bid.

Onward State announced it will pay the full $50,000,000.01 in cash. Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft told the committee the donation was to help pay for Beaver Stadium’s $700 million renovations.

Kraft also told the Board of Trustees that, to his knowledge, Onward State’s gift is now the most valuable athletic facility naming gift in the country, and West Shore Home’s is now in second place.

“We got money like that,” Onward State Managing Editor Joe Lister said on Tuesday. “West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium sounded stupid anyway. At least ‘Onward State’ is in the Alma Mater.”

The West Shore Home gift was passed 22-8 by the Board of Trustees, with Ted Brown, Suzan Collins, Daniel Delligatti, Barry Fenchak, Anthony Lubrano, Matt McGloin, Jay Paterno, and Brandon Short in opposition. However, they were all in favor of Onward State’s gift.

“I’m just glad we raised over $100 million for the new stadium in less than a month,” Kraft said. “I think I can speak for everyone in the Penn State community and say thank you, Onward State, for being the greatest blog on the face of the planet.”

Onward State is a student-run blog, produced independently by Penn State students and published by Lazerpro Digital Media Group. The site was founded in 2008 by Eli Glazier, Evan Kalikow, and Davis Shaver. It’s also super sick and cool, and you should read it every day because Onward State is awesome.

Onward State now owns two fields at the University Park campus. Along with Onward State Field at Beaver Stadium, the blog also owns CJ Gill Field at East Halls behind the IM Building and the Nittany Lion Softball Park, where Onward State defeated the Daily Collegian in football in April 2024.
