Report: Big Ten & SEC To Create New ‘Mega Intercollegiate League Of Football’

The days of the Big Ten and SEC are no more, folks.

The Big Ten and SEC will merge to form college football’s first super conference called the Mega Intercollegiate League of Football (MILF), ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Tuesday morning. The official merger won’t occur until the 2030-31 season.

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey met early Tuesday morning at SEC headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, to discuss the terms of the MILF merger. The two agreed to merge in the 2030-31 season, a year after the Big Ten’s current media rights deal ends.

“We are very excited for the MILF merger,” Petitti said Tuesday. “The MILF will be great for our 18 academic institutions for many years to come. I also give my deepest gratitude to Greg and the SEC for meeting and getting this merger done.”

Disney and ESPN also agreed to restructure the $3 billion TV contract with the SEC that runs through the 2033-34 season. The new terms are not yet known but are expected to adjust to include the 18 Big Ten schools for the last three years of the deal.

“The MILF was my idea,” Sankey boasted. “I think the MILF is going to change college athletics for the better. It will be sad to see legendary conferences like the Big Ten and the SEC die, but I’m excited to work with Tony and have the MILF compete with the NFL and this new world of collegiate and professional athletics.”

There isn’t a confirmed timeline for the MILF just yet, but sources say the merging will slowly begin over the next five years. Executives from both the Big Ten and SEC will work together to create a plan to best merge every varsity sport for the 34 schools in the new conference.

“Including all varsity sports is very important to us,” Petitti said. “Men’s sports, women’s sports, they’ll all be supported by the MILF. The MILF is here to love, support, and take care of all these sports, just like the MILF should.”

The topic of conference mergers began in June 2022 when USC and UCLA announced they would leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, and later Oregon and Washington did the same in August 2023. Texas and Oklahoma also announced they would leave the Big 12 for the SEC in February 2023.

The realignment changed college athletics for the foreseeable future and left the Pac-12 decimated as the Big 12 and ACC tried to play catch up with the SEC and Big Ten by adding Colorado, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Arizona State, UCF, Cinncinati, and Houston, and Cal, SMU, and Stanford, respectively.

The Big 12 and ACC have not responded to the MILF merger, but many expect the two to follow suit and merge as well, effectively turning college football into a pseudo-NFL league. However, Sankey isn’t ruling out the possibility of expanding the new conference.

“It’s still early, but I want to fill this MILF to its full capacity,” Sankey said. “With the help of Tony and the other great leaders in these two conferences working as one, I think everyone should be in the MILF and want to be in the MILF.”
