No Refund Theatre Presents: ‘Things I Know To Be True’

College is a place where kids become adults. Even as a senior, I refuse to believe I’m anywhere near being an adult. I’m always baffled when I see people supposedly my age clearly operating as adults. No Refund Theatre consistently has this effect.

This week’s play, “Things I Know to be True,” written by Andrew Bovell, doesn’t seem like a story that college students should perform. A 20-year-old with fake gray hair talking about regretting his early (mid-50s) retirement doesn’t sound quite right. And yet, it works.

The story revolves around one family and their idyllic small-town home. The parents, Ash Russo and Alex Clipper, are beginning to see their children leave the nest, one by one. Each kid has their own problems, both past and present, and not one of them is easy.

As the story progresses, each family member has their time in the sun. They deal with the problems both in and out, how they feel, and how the rest of the family feels about them. It’s hard, sometimes really hard, but they all push through.

The direction by LT Centolanza brought out the best in the story. Not just the grand confrontations, but the little moments. During intermission, I watched as the group fine-tuned a scene, focusing on tiny details — like what an actor did in the split seconds before speaking. You can see the care and effort that the entire cast and crew put into every second.

“Things I Know to be True” premieres on Thursday, April 3, and runs to Saturday, April 5, in Forum 111. The show begins at 8 p.m. and runs for a little over two hours. Prepare for an experience. If I talked it up too much (which I didn’t), NRT has a strict no-refund policy. It’s free.
