Jalen Kimber Showcasing Upside Despite Low Rank Ahead Of NFL Draft

After one season with Penn State football, cornerback Jalen Kimber is headed to the NFL Draft.
Kimber was rated as a four-star prospect out of Mansfield Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, per the 247Sports Composite. He was ranked as the seventh best corner in the country and 11th best overall player in the state of Texas as a member of the 2020 recruiting class. Kimber transferred to Penn State after playing two seasons at Georgia and another two at Florida.
“Slender lower body that broadens up top to present a player with physical upside and durability at the defensive back position. Possesses above average length at cornerback. One of the elite combine athletes in the nation,” 247Sports’ Barton Simmons said of Kimber as a high school recruit. “Up-trending prospect that is a likely power five impact starter and a mid-round NFL Draft pick; however, he has physical traits that give him first-round NFL upside.”
The Nittany Lion appeared in 14 of 16 games this season, tallying 37 total tackles, including 25 solo tackles and two passes defended. In his collegiate career, Kimber has seven total passes defended and an interception for a touchdown during the 2022 season at Florida.
Although Kimber didn’t get an invite the the NFL Combine, he shined at Penn State’s Pro Day in March. The Nittany Lion turned in a 33.5-inch vertical jump, a 10’3″ broad jump, and a blazing 4.39 40-yard dash. Kimber tied with Julian Fleming for the longest broad jump and was the clear fastest in the 40.
With his 6′ and 184-pound frame, Kimber has shown his quick feet, matched with his strength, could be useful on an NFL roster. Throughout the season, the Nittany Lion has displayed decent press coverage skills while being an asset in a zone scheme with his closing speed. What may come as a concern to NFL teams is the lack of turnover production. However, Kimber has shown value despite lacking in that category.
The Consensus Draft Board ranks Kimber as the 566th overall player available in this year’s draft. Kimber is projected to begin his professional career as an undrafted free agent come April.
Kimber had talks with “more than 20 teams” after the East-West Shrine Bowl, he told Justin Melo of the Draft Network. Kimber also told Melo that he particularly enjoyed his conversations with the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Buffalo Bills.
The NFL Draft begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, and ends on Saturday, April 26, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. All seven rounds will be televised on ESPN and the NFL Network.
