Report: Former Penn State Quarterback Sean Clifford Signs With The Cincinnati Bengals’ Practice Squad

Penn State football’s all-time passing leader finds a new home-his hometown.
After being released by the Green Bay Packers following the preseason, Sean Clifford has found another home, signing onto the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, along with former Jets’ QB Mike White, following the long-term injury to Cincinnati’s starter, Pro Bowler Joe Burrow.
Clifford, a fifth-round pick in 2023 by the Packers, spent one season backing up Jordan Love and another season on Green Bay’s practice squad before parting ways at the end of August. He’s played two games in his NFL career, completing his lone pass attempt for 37 yards. He also appeared in the 2024 Wild Card Round, his last NFL action to this point.
Clifford spent six years with the Nittany Lions, starting four of them. He finished his collegiate career with a 61.4 completion percentage, 10,661 passing yards, 86 passing touchdowns to 31 interceptions, 1,073 rushing yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns. He went 32-14 as a starter and left Happy Valley as Penn State’s all-time leader in every single passing category, including narrowly breaking Trace McSorley’s wins record of 31. He also led the Nittany Lions to victory in two New Year’s Six bowls, the 2019 Cotton Bowl Classic and the 2023 Rose Bowl.
He’ll join a crowded quarterback room in flux on the Bengals. Jake Browning will likely start for the foreseeable future, with Brett Rypien backing him up. From there, Clifford will try to make an impression to be the next man up in case of another injury. He also reunites with former teammate and roommate Mitchell Tinsley, who caught a touchdown last week for the Bengals.
