Nittany Lions in the NFL: Week Four Recap

While Penn State fans were grieving the Nittany Lions’ heartbreaking White Out loss to Oregon, Penn State alumni in the NFL represented the blue and white rather well in week four. Headlined by two former Penn State tight ends scoring their first touchdown of the season, there was no shortage of big plays from across the league.

Here’s a quick look at how some former Penn Staters played in week four.

Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles

Although the Eagles’ running back has had a slow start to his season, Barkley found the end zone for the third time on the year. This time, his touchdown run came on a fake quarterback sneak. Barkley walked in six points for the Eagles from six yards out. He’s been running behind a banged-up offensive line, totaling only 43 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tyler Warren, Indianapolis Colts

Warren has emerged as one of the best receiving tight ends in the league as a rookie. In week four, Warren caught five targets for 70 total yards. As he often did for Penn State, Warren got two carries in the backfield for the Colts, and one resulted in his first career touchdown. His 263 receiving yards are the most ever by a tight end in their first four games.

Parker Washington, Jacksonville Jaguars

The 2023 sixth-round draft pick, coming off his first full season, has not held much value in Jacksonville’s passing game, but he might have found himself a spot on special teams. Washington returned a punt 87 yards to the house for six points late in the third quarter. Jacksonville did not score the rest of the game and would hold on to a five-point lead to defeat the San Francisco 49ers.

Theo Johnson, New York Giants

2024 fourth-rounder Theo Johnson reeled in three catches for 17 yards in the Giants’ first win of the season. With Jaxson Dart taking over quarterback duties, Johnson saw five targets and got in the end zone on a shovel pass from Dart for his first touchdown of the season.

Micah Parsons, Green Bay Packers

Micah Parsons faced his former team and took part in the first tie of the young NFL season. Sunday night’s game was an offensive thriller as the two sides traded points with not much defensive presence from either team. Parsons did his best to contain his former quarterback Dak Prescott. He garnered eight pressures and a late sack that preserved the game for the Packers. His 94.2 PFF grade was the highest of any player in Sunday’s games.

Brenton Strange, Jacksonville Jaguars

Another Penn State alumnus getting active in Jacksonville is tight end Brenton Strange. Strange has thrived in the Jaguars’ offense this season, tabbing 182 yards on 19 receptions through the first four weeks. In Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, Strange racked up 45 yards on six receptions. Although Strange hasn’t found the end zone yet, his increased target share can get him there quickly.

Other Notable Alumni Performances:

  • Chris Godwin Jr. returned from the IR and posted 26 yards on three receptions in Tampa Bay’s loss to Philadelphia.
  • Blake Gillikin punted for 202 yards in the Cardinals’ loss to the Seahawks on Thursday night, averaging 50.5 yards per punt.
  • Mike Gesicki caught his only target for eight yards for the Cincinnati Bengals in their Monday night loss to the Denver Broncos.
