Your Guide To Penn State’s 2025 Family Weekend

Family weekend is here, folks!

With parents and families from all over heading into State College this weekend to visit their loved ones, the university has a slew of activities for everyone to enjoy.

From Friday, October 17, until Sunday, October 19, students and their families can enjoy all that campus has to offer and give the visitors a taste of the Penn State experience. Below is a list of some must-attend activities, and a full schedule of the weekend’s festivities can be found here.

Friday, October 17

Men’s Hockey vs. LIU

Where: Pegula Ice Arena

When: 7:30 p.m.

Penn State men’s hockey is taking on LIU this Friday at home. Stop in to witness the hype behind Gavin McKenna for yourself and experience the excitement of Hockey Valley.

Campus Chariot Pedicab Tours

Where: HUB entrance on Pollock Road

When: 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m

Take a tour of campus in your very own pedicab. The one-hour excursion will take 2-3 people around campus, while the pedicab driver entertains riders with University Park history and stories. Tours are $100 per group, and you can make your reservations at [email protected].

Old Main And Bell Tower Tours

Where: Old Main

When: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m

Experience Old Main from a whole new perspective this weekend. Learn about the history behind the campus’s most famous building and get the chance to climb 100 steps up into its bell tower.

Haunted Valley Ghost Tours

Where: Hintz Family Alumni Center

When: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Get in the Halloween spirit with a haunted house and guided ghost tours around campus. Learn about the eerie stories that have taken place on campus and the ghosts that allegedly inhabit it.

Saturday, October 18

Parents & Families Welcome Breakfast Reception

Where: HUB Alumni Hall

When: 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

The welcome breakfast will serve as the weekend’s official kickoff, even if you already have a full slate of activities on Friday. Enjoy a continental breakfast and meet other Penn State families at the HUB on Saturday.

Nittany Lion Goosechase Race

Where: Goosechase app

When: 10 a.m.

The Nittany Lion Goosechase Race is an interactive scavenger hunt race for families to enjoy. The two-day event will take participants across campus, and the first 40 families to finish will win a gift bag. To participate, download the Goosechase app and enter the join code: SHBMK2.

Pumpkin Fest

Where: Arboretum

When: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Arboretum’s annual event offers visitors a pumpkin carving contest, lighted jack-o’-lantern displays, food trucks, music, and activities for all ages to enjoy.

AstroNight

Where: Davey Lab

When: 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

AstroNight at Davey lab has planetarium shows, a chance to look through their state-of-the-art telescopes, and more.

Sunday, October 19

Family Pictures At The Nittany Lion Shrine

Where: Lion Shrine

When: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Commemorate your weekend with a classic picture in front of the famous Nittany Lion Shrine. Volunteers will be at the shrine to take photos of you and your family before you head home.

Palmer Museum Of Art: Visions Of A Changing Planet

Where: Palmer Art Museum

When: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m

Stop by the Palmer Art Museum to end your weekend with an exhibit about how artists engage with nature and the natural world. The 45-minute tour is free to attend and no registration is required.
