Penn State Women’s Soccer Defeats Purdue 1-0

Penn State Women’s Soccer (8-5-3, 5-2-3 Big Ten) blanked Purdue (5-9-3, 2-6-1 Big Ten) 1-0 in West Lafayette on Thursday night.
The Nittany Lions held strong on defense, and Amelia White scored the only goal by either team. Purdue’s scoreless streak increased to four games.
How It Happened
The first half of the game was back and forth, with both teams having multiple opportunities to score. Purdue attempted to strike first when Megan Santa Cruz took a shot in the 3rd minute that was blocked by Penn State.
The Nittany Lions got their first chance in the 7th minute when Riley Cross fired a shot that barely flew over the net. Purdue would get its second scoring opportunity in the 11th minute, but Angelina Thoreson’s shot flew well wide of the goal.
Purdue got the ball back on offense in the 15th minute and worked its way into the Nittany Lions’ final third. Margeaux Chauvet tried a shot that went out of bounds for a Penn State goal kick.
The Nittany Lions looked primed to score in the 17th minute, but an offsides penalty took away an easy goal. Purdue’s next offensive attack was stopped by an offsides of their own in the 20th minute. Following the offsides, White took her first shot of the game, which missed, giving Purdue a goal kick.
In the 25th minute, the Boilermakers had a great opportunity to score on a breakaway. Irene Campo fired a shot that was blocked by Penn State and deflected to Lillian Bane. Bane rocketed the ball on target, but Nittany Lion keeper Mackenzie Gress was in position to save it.
In the 32nd minute, White raced past multiple defenders and shot across the goal, finding the left side of the net and putting the Nittany Lions up 1-0. Molly Martin was credited with an assist.
Purdue spent most of the remainder of the first half on offense but could not find an opening to score. Gabriella Angulo fired a long shot off target in the 39th minute, but the clock ran out with the Nittany Lions in the lead.
The Boilermakers started the second half with the ball, but an early foul gave control to Penn State. The Nittany Lions worked their way into the final third, but White’s third shot of the game was wide of the net.
The Nittany Lions started their next attack on a breakaway by Kaitlyn MacBean, who fired an off-target shot. The resulting goal kick was turned over, and White would take her fourth shot of the game, missing to the right.
Penn State took a corner in the 55th minute that Martin knocked toward the goal. Boilermaker keeper Emily Edwards made a clean save to prevent the score. Edwards got her second save of the game in the 57th minute on a long shot by Riley Gleason.
Purdue got its first chance of the second half in the 61st minute, but Cherry Yu’s shot rolled just wide of the goal.
MacBean fired her second shot of the game off target in the 65th minute. The Boilermakers went back on the attack off the resulting goal kick and found their second chance of the half when Chiara Singarella launched a long shot over the goal.
In the 73rd minute, Campo had an opportunity to tie the game. She received a pass right in front of the goal, but her shot was popped up in the air and Gress made the easy save.
In the 83rd minute, a foul gave Purdue a free kick. Emilia Deppe rocketed the ball towards the net, but Gress was able to make the save.
Purdue mounted one final attack as the clock ran out. Angulo and Thoreson took back-to-back shots in the 89th minute, but the Nittany Lion defense held on to secure the 1-0 win.
