Fix Your Wait Times: An Open Letter To Penn State To Fix Mobile Ordering Times

On Monday, I was sitting in my 9 a.m. class. Nothing crazy, listening to my professor lecture. A usual Monday. The catch? I was thirsty.

I decided I wanted the best drink ever—a strawberry açaí refresher with lemonade from Edge in the West Commons. However, I was in a rush, so I planned on using the Penn State Mobile Order app.

The wait for this? 92 minutes. Folks, they only opened two hours ago.

The unfortunate truth is that this is the consistent problem we see with the Mobile Order app. Time in and time out, students are always let down by absurd wait times for drinks and orders. The irony in all of this? Oftentimes, when the wait is this long, there is no line.

People may claim “just go in person” or “plan to order ahead”. That’s not the major issue at play here. The fact that these wait times are skewed beyond belief is the issue here. I’ve mentioned Edge a lot, but it’s more than just the coffee shops. It’s almost every establishment on campus.

A prominent example? State Chicken. Now, all of these may be in West Commons, but bear with me here. I will arrive at State Chicken after my final class, stroll in, just to see no line whatsoever. Why was my wait time 72 minutes if there was no line? It’s a problem.

I have to start ordering my food an hour ahead, during class. Even at that point, there’s no guarantee I will get the time I wish for, because apparently, everyone wants food or coffee the moment these places open. Bridging off of that, there is not a chance in the world that enough people go to the same spot every day, without fail, to drive up the wait that much. It simply makes no sense.

I get it, there are larger issues at play here, but the bottom line is that this isn’t just affecting me. This is affecting the student body as a whole (or at least the majority that uses Mobile Order). Oftentimes, these smaller establishments are the only options, especially when dining halls are full to capacity during lunch rush.

The wait times have made me late for class before, too. I may be an outlier here, but I just do not like being in class after it starts. It’s awkward and looks bad on me as a student. The simple fact I was late because of a flawed system says enough. Folks, we go to school with almost 50,000 other people. More than likely, this has happened to others, too. And not just a small minority.

Am I saying we need a complete removal of the system? No, never. Mobile Order is fantastic. Should we completely overhaul it so no one is waiting 92 minutes for a cup of coffee? Yes. The answer is always yes.

All I am asking, Penn State, is that you consider a change. A change would be fantastic, but even just looking into what is wrong would be a game-changer.

For my sanity and my fellow students, fix mobile ordering times.
