No Refund Theatre Presents: ‘Feathers & Teeth’

For the second week in a row, No Refund Theatre gets spooky. “Feathers and Teeth,” written by Charise Castro Smith and directed by Spencer Showers, is a bit of family drama and a bit haunted house — and it works wonders.

The four cast members all act their butts off; each character is distinct and thankfully memorable. We have the lead: Chris, played by Gabriela López, a girl who’s in the latter parts of a downward spiral after the recent death of her mother. The happy couple, Arthur (Cash Cashour) and Carol (Meghan Kaeser), play off each other wonderfully as a deceptively simple sitcom couple. Then, there’s Hugo, Mahdi Bdairi, a German Boy Scout who shows up for very little reason, and I’m so happy he did.

After the death of Chris’s mom, her father found a new gal (Carol), his dead wife’s hospice nurse. Chris thinks this may be a bit too soon — I don’t disagree. Of course, Chris’s mind takes her places, and she eventually arrives at the conclusion that her mother’s death wasn’t all about the cancer.

This nuclear family dynamic is thrown into spooky territory by the appearance of an unidentifiable creature, which remains unseen in a pot for most of the show. Its only signs of life are the eerie noises of chewing and groaning, performed by Jack Stevens. The creature comes into their lives by way of a traffic collision with Arthur’s car, and remains thanks to their fear of it being an endangered species. As you can guess, this was a bad decision all around.

I won’t spoil any more; you really just need to see it. “Feathers and Teeth” is fun, creepy, and consistently bold. Go ahead and see it from November 6-8 in Forum 111. The show starts at 8 p.m. and runs for about an hour and a half. Enjoy.
