No. 1 Penn State Wrestling Crushes No. 22 Oklahoma 45-0 In Season Opener

No. 1 Penn State wrestling (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) opened its season with a 45-0 win over No. 22 Oklahoma (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions won all 10 matches convincingly.
Highlights of the dual include tech falls by Marcus Blaze, Shayne Van Ness, Joe Sealey, Mitchell Mesenbrink, and Rocco Welsh. Levi Haines also won his match with a pin.
How It Happened
197 Pounds
Connor Mirasola kicked off the meet for the Nittany Lions at the 197-pound weight class. He went up against No. 8 DJ Parker. Mirasola got the bout’s first takedown and jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the first period.
Mirasola kept his foot on the gas in the second, getting another takedown early. Parker was able to rack up a few points on escapes, but Mirasola got another takedown late in the second. Oklahoma challenged the call, but it stood after review, and Mirasola took a 9-3 lead into the final period.
Mirasola continued dominating in the third, and the match finished as a 13-3 major decision. Penn State took the lead 3-0.
285 Pounds
Next up for the Nittany Lions was No. 11 Cole Mirasola as he took on No. 24 Juan Mora. The second of the Mirasola twins opened the scoring with a takedown and had a 3-1 lead after one.
Mora closed in on the lead in the second, and it was 3-2 going into the final period.
Mirasola was able to hold on in the third and won the decision 5-2. The Nittany Lions had a 4-0 lead after the first two matches.
125 Pounds
Penn State sent out returning All-American No. 3 Luke Lilledahl to take on Conrad Hendriksen. Lilledahl came out very strong in the opening period, securing two takedowns and amassing over a minute of ride time to take a 6-2 lead after the first.
Lilledahl continued to dominate and got the major. He opens his sophomore season with a 14-4 win. Penn State extends its lead to 11-0.
133 Pounds
Marcus Blaze made his highly anticipated debut for the Nittany Lions next. He went up against Tyson Charmoli. Blaze opened his career with a quick takedown and took a 3-0 lead after one.
Blaze kept up the pressure and managed to get two more takedowns to take a commanding 14-3 lead going into the third.
Blaze didn’t take his time and got the near fall to win the match 18-3. The tech fall increased Penn State’s lead to 16-0.
141 Pounds
No. 11 Aaron Nagao was the next Nittany Lion out for the defending champs. He faced Alex Braun. Nagao was quick to take the lead with a takedown. Braun attempted a reversal, but Nagao proved to be too fast, and he got an escape. Nagao didn’t seem to have any rust at all after missing a year recovering from surgery, and he had a 5-2 lead after one.
Braun responded nicely with a takedown to start the middle period, but Nagao was able to get a reversal soon after to keep his lead going into the final period.
Nagao held onto his lead and won in a 9-5 decision. The Nittany Lions took a 19-0 lead at the half.
149 Pounds
First to take the mat after the half is No. 1 Shayne Van Ness to take on Layton Schneider. Van Ness struck first with a takedown. Van Ness managed almost two and a half minutes of ride time, but no other scoring, and it was 3-0 after the first period.
Van Ness got on the board again with a two-leg takedown. Schneider was called for stalling soon after, and Van Ness clinched ride time at almost four minutes before the end of the second.
Van Ness kept pouring it on and won the match by tech fall, 20-1.
157 Pounds
Up next for Penn State was Joe Sealey, who was going against Landyn Sommer. Sealey went up 9-2 after one thanks to three takedowns.
More of the same in the second, Sealey tallied up two more takedowns to take a 15-4 lead into the final period.
Sealey wins the match 19-4 by tech fall. Penn State widens its lead to 29-0.
165 Pounds
No.1 Mitchell Mesenbrink was next up for the Nittany Lions. The defending National Champion opens his season against Owen Eck. Mesenbrink ended this one quickly, winning by tech fall in the first period, 19-4, to give Penn State a 34-0 lead.
174 Pounds
Another No. 1-ranked wrestler took the mat for Penn State. This time, it was Levi Haines, who was up against No. 33 Carter Schubert. Haines was attended to early and spent some time in concussion protocol, but soon returned. After a close start to the period, Haines opened the scoring with a takedown and a four-point fall to take a 7-0 lead into the second period.
Haines ended the match early with a pin in the second. The Nittany Lions took a 40-0 lead into the final match.
184 Pounds
The final wrestler to take the mat was No. 2 Rocco Welsh, who took on Anders Thompson. Welsh got three takedowns and had a 9-2 lead after one.
Early in the second, Welsh managed an ankle pick and a takedown. Welsh also had over two minutes of riding time going into the third.
Welsh got another takedown to win this one by tech fall to close out a decisive 45-0 win for Penn State.
What’s Next?
The Nittany Lions will make their way to West Point, New York, to participate in the Black Knight Invitational at Army West Point. It will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, November 23.
