November 15, 2025: The Penn State Sports Equinox

We witnessed history on Saturday, folks.
For the first time ever, Penn State hoops, football, and men’s hockey all played and won on the same day.
Hoops went on the road to knock off La Salle in a non-conference bout, football snapped a six-game losing streak in East Lansing against Michigan State, and hockey got out of its own rut by beating No. 2 Michigan. But it wasn’t just those three that stole the show on Saturday.
The No. 6 women’s hockey squad defeated Syracuse at home by a nine-goal margin, tying a program record by scoring 11 goals. Not to mention, the lone team currently in postseason play at the university, the women’s soccer team, blanked Army in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Jeffrey Field during the men’s hockey and football games.
It didn’t even stop at a team level, as former NCAA wrestling champion and alumnus Bo Nickal delivered a vicious knockout to Rodolfo Vieira in a preliminary match at UFC 322 in Madison Square Garden.
All this winning provides an interesting thought. Has anything like this happened before? If it has, when?
Well, for one, there was an opportunity for hoops, football, and hockey to all win on the same day… just last Saturday. Instead, while hoops won on the road at New Haven, football lost a heartbreaker in Beaver Stadium to No. 2 Indiana, and hockey got run out of the rink in East Lansing against No. 1 Michigan State.
It’s quite rare for the three to play on the same day in general, even if it’s already happened twice in 2025 and is scheduled to occur again on Saturday, November 21. Before 2025, it had only occurred five times, most recently on November 24, 2023.
There have been some close calls to get to this point. On November 19, 2016, the men’s hockey team destroyed Arizona State, 8-0, while the football team continued to roll en route to a Big Ten title with a shutout win over Rutgers. What was Pat Chambers and Penn State hoops up to? Playing No. 1 Duke in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun Arena, of course.
Playing against future NBA talent Luke Kennard and Grayson Allen, the Nittany Lions competed, with Tony Carr leading all players in scoring with 20, but they didn’t have enough for one of the best teams in the nation, falling 78-68.
On November 9, 2019, the basketball team did its job, defeating Wagner by 27 points, while the hockey team pulled out a 6-4 win over Michigan State. It all led up to the football team traveling to Minnesota as the No. 4 team in the country and in good position for the College Football Playoff, but they were upset by the Golden Gophers.
The most recent close call came on the aforementioned day in 2023. It was Black Friday, and the football team was playing an extremely rare game on a weekday, blowing out Michigan State at Ford Field in Detroit. The hockey team also played, blowing out Lindenwood, 9-3. It again came down to basketball, but while playing in the ESPN Events Invitational down in Kissimmee, Florida, they lost by double digits against Butler.
But why is it so rare for the three to play on the same day? Well, it’s on purpose. When there’s a football game in Happy Valley, very few other sports are scheduled, so the university can revolve around its highest-grossing sport. When hockey and football are home at the same time, hockey reverts to a Thursday-Friday series. The hoops team has been away from State College in both Saturday games this season and will be playing in Connecticut next Saturday, when football is hosting Nebraska at home. The hockey team will be in Minnesota.
While Saturday itself was historic, a lot happened over the weekend at large. The women’s hockey team swept their two-game series, the women’s volleyball team won on Sunday against Ohio State, the reigning national champion wrestling team opened their season with a dominant win over No. 18 Oklahoma on Friday, and the women’s basketball team won in Philadelphia against St. Joseph’s.
Here’s to more “sports equinoxes” in the future, folks.
