Every Penn State Reference You Might’ve Missed In Famous Christmas Songs

Well, folks, it’s that time of year again when Christmas music fills the airwaves and holiday tunes are inescapable no matter where you go.
Everyone knows the classics, and chances are you’ve been singing along to them for years. What most people don’t know, however, is that every time they turn on the radio and tap their feet to these familiar tunes, they are missing blatant Penn State references in every song.
We’ve taken the liberty of pointing out these references for you, so the next time you hear a holiday jingle, you can remember there’s Christmas spirit and Penn State spirit everywhere you go.
“And so this is Christmas (War is over) / And what have we done? / Another year over (War is over) / And a new one just begun” – Happy Xmas (War is Over)
John Lennon’s classic hit resonates especially strongly this year, with the 54-day head coach search finally coming to a close. After countless ups and downs, Matt Campbell has come to save the day. War is over, folks, and a new era has begun.
“I really can’t stay (But, baby, it’s cold outside) / I’ve got to go away (But, baby, it’s cold outside)” – Baby, It’s Cold Outside
This one rings true for any student who has ever tried to escape their frat situationship after a night out, then been bombarded by countless reasons to hang out with them. Bundle up, embrace the cold, and don’t let them talk you into staying.
“I’ll have a blue Christmas without you / I’ll be so blue just thinking about you” – Blue Christmas
Almost everyone is itching for finals to be over to go home and enjoy some well-deserved rest, but after just a few weeks at home, you know you’ll be desperate to return to Happy Valley. Penn Staters will be blue thinking about their beloved school and how much they miss their friends.
“Last Christmas, I gave you my heart / But the very next day, you gave it away / This year, to save me from tears / I’ll give it to someone special” – Last Christmas
Last Christmas, I gave Drew Allar my heart, but the very next day, he gave it away (threw an interception against Notre Dame). This year, to save me from tears, I’ll give it to someone special (Ethan Grunkemeyer).
“Jack Frost nipping at your nose / Yuletide carols being sung by a choir and folks dressed up like Eskimos” – The Christmas Song
December isn’t even halfway through, and Penn State students are already dressed for the tundra as they make their way to and from classes.
“Out of all the reindeer, you know you’re the mastermind / Run, run Rudolph, Randolph, ain’t too far behind” – Run Rudolph Run
An ode to Kaytron, everyone’s favorite running back.
“Everybody knows that he’s out there now / Everybody knows that the fat man’s comin'” – The Fat Man’s Comin’
Santa might be a fat man, but Kayton is the fat man. Really, every song about Santa is just an ode to him now that I’m thinking about it.
Matt Campbell Carols
While all these aforementioned songs may allude to Penn State, if you’re looking for something more on the nose, look no further than a new Onward State original, Matt Campbell Carols.
Happy Holidays, folks!
