Four Penn State Football Players Opt Out Of Pinstripe Bowl

The list of opt-outs keeps growing, folks.

Offensive linemen Nick Dawkins, Nolan Rucci, and Drew Shelton, as well as tight end Khalil Dinkins, have opted out of the Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson, interim head coach Terry Smith said on Zoom Friday.

The group of seniors joins Zane Durant, Nick Singleton, Vega Ioane, and Zakee Wheatley to opt out of the bowl game scheduled for noon on Saturday in Yankee Stadium. Alex Birchmeier, Chaz Coleman, A.J. Harris, Kari Jackson, Daniel Jennings, and Elliot Washington chose to transfer out of the program following the end of the regular season. True freshman Alex Tatsch will miss the game due to an injury sustained in training.

Dawkins, Rucci, and Shelton form three staples of the starting offensive line rotation this season. The Nittany Lions rushed for 2,130 yards and 30 rushing touchdowns on 434 total attempts.

Dawkins, a two-time captain, started every game for the last two seasons as the Nittany Lions’ center. He was the recipient of the Wuerffel Trophy, presented to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field.

Rucci, a newcomer to the Nittany Lions last season, started in all 12 games this year and made an appearance in every game last season.

Shelton started in every game for the last season, but has made an appearance at least once since he joined the Nittany Lions in the 2022-23 season.

Dinkins served as one of the three rotating tight ends for the Nittany Lions this season. He posted 14 catches, 167 yards, and two touchdowns, the best season of his career. In total, the tight end has tallied 37 catches, 399 yards, and seven touchdowns.

The Nittany Lions will be out a plethora of starters for its second trip to the Pinstripe Bowl. Although Clemson is also feeling the effects of its own opt-outs, Penn State losing its entire offensive line will not go over well for Penn State’s running game.
