Penn State Women’s Hockey’s Tessa Janecke Named AHA’s Forward Of The Week

Tessa Janecke shone in Penn State women’s hockey weekend series at Mercyhurst, earning her Atlantic Hockey America’s (AHA) Forward of the Week. The senior forward from Illinois racked up four total points, made up of a goal and three assists, over the two games played in Erie.

In Friday’s matchup, Janecke dished out two assists, which accounted for two of the three goals Penn State scored in their shutout win. The following day, Janecke, who was named to the USA’s Olympic women’s ice hockey team, found the back of the net once and set up the first goal of the game in the second period.

Janecke, who has played at Penn State her entire collegiate career, is no stranger to AHA’s awards. Last season, the Illinois native was awarded Forward of the Week by AHA four separate times, also garnering AHA Forward of the Month in October and November, which ultimately led her to earn AHA’s Player and Forward of the Year.

The senior captain has scored points in 17 of 21 games this season, with 14 of them resulting in multiple points. These successes have brought Janecke to the top of the charts in many statistics. She leads the AHA in points (53), assists (36), face-off win percentage (.656), hat-tricks (2), and overall plus/minus (+27). She is also fifth in goals (17) and fourth in game-winning goals (3). These numbers have resulted in three AHA weekly awards and two monthly awards.

Her senior campaign has been nothing short of spectacular, though not surprising for Janecke, who has helped lift the Nittany Lions to fourth in USCHO’s women’s division 1 poll.

Janecke will aim to continue her successful season as Penn State women’s ice hockey travels to Syracuse this weekend for a two-game matchup.
