Penn State Wrestling’s Rocco Welsh & Cole Mirasola Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

After a dominant weekend, Penn State wrestlers Rocco Welsh and Cole Mirasola have been awarded Big Ten weekly honors, it was announced Thursday.

Welsh was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after going 2-0 on the weekend. He had a 22-7 tech fall against Northwestern’s J.D. Perez, but the real highlight of his weekend was taking on No. 1-ranked Angelo Ferrari of Iowa and beating him 2-1 in a tiebreaker. Welsh is now 11-0 on the season with four techs as he looks to take over the No. 1 rank for 184 pounds.

Mirasola was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after also going 2-0 over the weekend. He took on Iowa’s No. 5-ranked Ben Kueter and won in a 4-3 decision victory. He also secured a 19-4 tech fall in the first period against Northwestern’s Gabe Christenson.

Penn State will look to continue its perfect dual meet record on Friday, January 23, when the team hosts Indiana at Rec Hall. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
