[Photo Story] Penn State Hoops Win First Conference Game Of The Season

Last Sunday, Penn State men’s basketball ended a historically poor stretch of play after defeating the Golden Gophers of Minnesota on a last-second shot from guard Kayden Mingo. This was the Nittany Lions’ first conference win of the season and first win in over a month.

Our photographers were there to capture the incredible moment. Let’s take a look.

The Nittany Lions took the court in front of their largest crowd of the season, thanks to the “Winter Sports Weekend,” looking to get their first win since December.

After an impressive twenty minutes, the Nittany Lions went into the half up 41-34. The Nittany Lions had gotten the lead up to as much as thirteen in the first half — the largest the program has had against a Big Ten opponent all season.

In the second half, Penn State began to fall apart, letting the Golden Gophers tie the game with just thirty seconds left.

While the Golden Gophers outscored the Nittany Lions in the second half, it would prove to not be enough.

With just seconds remaining, Mingo drove into the paint, stuttered, pivoted looking for an open shot, then snuck around the Minnesota defender for a miraculous step-through lay-up to go up two. With just two seconds left, Dominick Stewart stole the Minnesota inbound, ending the game.

The team celebrated together, surrounding Mingo after his go-ahead bucket, alongside fans, taking pictures and signing autographs.
