No. 1 Penn State Wrestling Thrashes No. 10 Michigan 38-3

Another one bites the dust, folks.

Penn State wrestling (13-0, 7-0 Big Ten) continued its dominant regular season with a 38-3 win over No. 10 Michigan (8-4, 4-2 Big Ten) on Friday night in Ann Arbor.

The Nittany Lions tallied 36 takedowns en route to a six-bonus-point performance, including five technical falls and a major decision.

The match was highlighted by true freshman Nate Desmond taking out All-American Dylan Ragusin at 141 pounds.

How It Happened

125 Pounds

To open the match, No. 1 Luke Lilledahl faced off against No. 23 Diego Sotelo at 125 pounds. Lilledahl struck first with three first-period takedowns to go up 9-2 after the first period.

In the second, Lilledahl piled on three more takedowns to go up 19-5 before hitting a reversal at the top of the third frame to win by 21-5 technical fall.

133 Pounds

Next, No. 4 Marcus Blaze wrestled Gauge Botero at 133 pounds. The Nittany Lion scored his first takedown near the midway point of the first period. He tacked on another takedown near the end of the first, putting the Wolverine in a vulnerable cradle position, and received four near fall before the buzzer.

Blaze escaped after 35 seconds to go up 11-1 in the second period. The Nittany Lion tacked on another two takedowns to complete the 17-2 technical fall.

141 Pounds

In the next match, true freshman Nate Desmond got the nod over usual starter No. 12 Braeden Davis to take on No. 26 Dylan Ragusin. The two wrestlers didn’t score a point in the first period; however, both gave offensive advances before the buzzer.

Ragusin escaped to start the second period, but was taken down by the Nittany Lion to take the lead with a minute left. The Wolverine reversed Desmond to take the lead 4-3 before the end of the second period.

Desmond reversed Ragusin to start the third, but the Wolverine escaped to tie the match at 5-5. Ragusin was close to a takedown along the edge of the mat, but the Nittany Lion was saved by the buzzer to take the match to sudden victory.

The Nittany Lion was thrown into a dangerous position, but slipped out and was able to take Ragusin down to take the 8-5 decision victory.

149 pounds

Next, No. 1 Shayne Van Ness wrestled No. 13 Lachlan McNeil at 149 pounds. The two wrestlers didn’t register any points in the opening frame.

McNeil escaped early in the second period to take the lead. Van Ness received a penalty point and took down McNeil with a minute remaining in the period to take the lead 4-1.

The Nittany Lion escaped to stretch his lead to four in the third period. Van Ness dropped to a single-leg takedown to go up 8-1 with a minute remaining. After riding time, Van Ness walked away with a 9-1 major decision.

157 Pounds

In the final match of the first half, No. 4 PJ Duke faced off against No. 13 Cam Catrabone. The Wolverine was able to secure the first Michigan takedown of the night early in the first period, but Duke escaped after just seven seconds. Catrabone escaped after the injury time restart to add a point to his total.

In the second period, Duke took down the Wolverine after Catrabone’s escape. The Nittany Lion picked up his second takedown to take the lead 7-6 before the buzzer.

Catrabone got to his second takedown in the third period, but Duke escaped and quickly got to his third takedown to retake the lead 11-9 with 15 seconds remaining. Catrabone escaped but was unable to mount the comeback. The Nittany Lion escaped with the 12-10 decision.

165 Pounds

After the break, No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink took on Justin Gates at 165 pounds. Mesenbrink started hot with two first period takedowns and forcing a stall warning out of the Wolverine.

In the second, Mesenbrink reversed Gates off the whistle to stretch his lead to 8-1. The Nittany Lion secured his third takedown of the match with over a minute remaining in the period. Mesenbrink allowed Gates to stand up before getting his fourth takedown.

In the third, Mesenbrink tallied his fifth and sixth takedowns to get the 20-5 technical fall.

174 Pounds

At 174 pounds, No. 1 Levi Haines faced off against No. 11 Beau Mantanona. The Wolverine was close to a takedown, but the Nittany Lion was able to scramble into a takedown of his own to take the 3-1 lead early in the first.

The Nittany Lion took the Wolverine down for a second time after Mantanona escaped off the whistle. Haines secured his third takedown and forced a stall warning out of the Michigan wrestler. After the second period, Haines led Mantanona 9-2 with over 2:30 in riding time.

In the third period, Haines elected to start in neutral position. The Nittany Lion eventually secured his fourth takedown and was awarded a penalty point for Mantanona’s stalling. Haines tallied his fifth and sixth takedowns to get the 19-4 technical fall.

184 Pounds

Next, No. 1 Rocco Welsh wrestled No. 7 Brock Mantanona at 184 pounds. The Nittany Lion kicked off the scoring with a knee pick to get the takedown.

The second period started with a Welsh escape to stretch his lead.

In the third, Mantanona escaped after a minute to get on the board. Welsh secured his second takedown of the match before the buzzer to get the 8-1 decision victory.

197 Pounds

At 197 pounds, No. 1 Josh Barr faced off against No. 20 Hayden Walters. The Nittany Lion got to the takedown early, but was unable to secure back points after a dangerous position. Barr was looking for an armbar pinning combination in the final minute of the period, but was still unable to tally any near fall.

In the second, Barr took the Wolverine down for the second and third time after Walters escaped off the whistle.

In the third, Barr tallied three more takedowns to secure the 19-4 technical fall.

Heavyweight

To cap off the dual, No. 12 Cole Mirasola took on No. 5 Taye Ghadiali. No points were scored in the first period; however, the Nittany Lion was the main aggressor.

Mirasola finally escaped after over a minute of riding time from Ghadiali. The Wolverine took down the Nittany Lion shortly after the escape to retake the lead.

In the third period, Ghadiali escaped to make it 4-1. Although Mirasola was close to a takedown at the end of the period, Ghadiali was able to defend and take the shutout off the board for Michigan.

What’s Next?

Penn State will be back home next Friday for the biggest match of the NCAA wrestling season as the top-ranked Nittany Lions host the No. 2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the Bryce Jordan Center at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
