No. 4 Penn State Women’s Hockey Beats Lindenwood 6-3

No. 4 Penn State women’s hockey (27-4-0, 20-1-0 AHA) kept on rolling in AHA, taking down Lindenwood (11-18-2, 9-11-1 AHA), 6-3 on Friday night in Centene Community Ice Arena.
Lindenwood took the early 1-0 lead just over two minutes in, but the Nittany Lions scored five unanswered goals to take firm control of the game early in the second period and coasted from there.
How It Happened
Things didn’t get off to a good start for the Nittany Lions, as Lindenwood got early pressure on Katie DeSa and wound up scoring the game’s opening goal when Zsofia Pazmandi put home a rebound at 2:23 in the first period.
That lead would last a total of 28 seconds, as after winning the ensuing faceoff, Penn State established itself in the offensive zone and similarly tied the game, with Grace Outwater tapping in a rebound for her team-leading 21st goal of the season at 2:51.
Lindenwood would take the game’s first penalty at 3:48, when Pazmandi was called for interference. After a good start to the penalty kill, they’d concede a go-ahead goal to Danica Maynard, her ninth of the season, to put Penn State up 2-1 at 4:35 in the first.
The AHA regular season champions didn’t stop there. Just under two minutes later, Katelyn Roberts put a third goal past Lindenwood goaltender Lexington Secreto at 6:12 to make it 3-1 Nittany Lions. It was Roberts’ 13th of the season.
Lindenwood tried to counter the offensive onslaught by Penn State, but managed just a few shots on goal throughout a span that was completely dominated by the visitors. Sophie Morrow buried her fourth goal of the season at 9:59, putting the Nittany Lions up 4-1 halfway through the first period and chasing Secreto.
To their credit, Lindenwood spent the back half of the period peppering DeSa in net, especially after Mikah Keller went off for holding at 16:02, but despite evening the shots on goal at 16 by the end of the period, Penn State took its 4-1 lead into the second.
Lindenwood got the first two shots of the second period, but would give up the period’s first goal to McKenna Walsh, who scored her fourth goal of the season on a deflection at 1:25 to make it 5-1.
Paige Cline got one back for Lindenwood at 6:20, but the Nittany Lions put another one past Madison Bowtell eight minutes after, as Shelby Shane scored her first of the season at 14:23 to make it 6-2.
After dueling minors for Kendall Butze and Lindenwood’s Hannah Dods made it 4-on-4, DeSa surrendered a third goal late in the second period on a shot by Josey Dunne-Weeks at 17:45, but the Nittany Lions took a 6-3 lead into the second intermission.
Lindenwood opened the third period on the power play after Roberts went off for slashing with 35 seconds left in the second, but Penn State’s penalty kill held them off the board. Penn State got its second power play of the game at 7:35 on a high-sticking penalty by Cline, but Lindenwood killed it off.
After nine combined goals in the first two periods, both goaltenders put up a zero in an uneventful third period, as Lindenwood didn’t come close to threatening the Nittany Lions’ three-goal lead.
