Theme Hours That Should Be Incorporated into THON Weekend

It’s 6 a.m. on the Sunday of your final THON. You’ve stood on your feet for almost 40 hours. You’re hungry, sleep-deprived, and your friends next to you do not understand the concept of personal space. The past four years have all been relatively the same. Line Dance after Line Dance, stretch after stretch, you think you may know what comes next, but here comes Onward State to stir the pot with brand new theme hours we’d like to see during THON.

Sports Highlights Hour

Nothing gets a group of young men together like sports. Thousands of strangers together under the roof of the Bryce Jordan Center seem to be looking for an excuse to get amped up. A one-hour YouTube compilation of the greatest sports moments in history will draw engagement like never seen before. Imagine almost 10,000 men with all of their eyes glued to the Jumbotron. Oohing and aahing as if they aren’t watching the same clips they watched for hours on end as children. People often say nothing brings the world together as music does. It’s fair to say that the statement holds up during THON, so why not try it with sports?

Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? Hour – Greek Life Edition

One of the most common stereotypes you will find on a college campus — the dumb frat bro. Getting one brother from each fraternity to compete in a series of simple questions would be a great watch. The chaos that would ensue from just one incorrect answer would lead to endless banter among all of the campus. One victory could give a fraternity bragging rights for the entire year, that is, unless a fifth grader has something to say about that. Having a THON child win in the end would create an awesome memory for all.

The Doom Scroll Hour

Nothing says THON like having zero reception in the BJC. With that comes a core part of the college student’s daily life cut out of the picture, the doom scroll. For some people at THON, it may be days since they scrolled through social media. Some of the biggest pieces of engagement I’ve seen in my two years at THON were AJ and Big Justice’s Boom, Six-Seven, and Chicken Jockey. Imagine how crazy a sleep-deprived crowd would go for some 4 a.m. Sunday morning brain rot.

Karaoke Hour

It’s always a great moment when you see your buddy up on stage embarrassing himself. Dedicating one hour out of the 46 for one representative from every single THON organization to go up on stage for three minutes would create an unforgettable moment. Hearing them sing their hearts out would be sure to have crowds singing along to represent their org well. It would be a great way for smaller organizations and branch campus groups to get the spotlight during a busy week.

Stand-up Comedy Hour

A stand-up comedy would be a breath of fresh air. During THON, speakers are blasting through the majority of the 46 hours. Taking an hour break to listen to people talking and laughter filling the room would be extremely refreshing. Contestants could be pulled from Penn State’s Second Floor Comedy Club.

THON Wedding Hour

The “Frat Wedding” is a classic Penn State tradition for many. Coming together to celebrate two complete strangers brings nothing but joy and happiness to all in attendance. THON has done great set-building in the past. Imagine a pearly, white arch at the end of a line of pews surrounded by flowers. THON kids walking down the aisles as flower girls and boys while an acapella group sings angelically. As the groom places the ring pop on the bride’s finger, grapejuice bottles pop into the air as the crowd erupts. A THON wedding would be engaging for all, as it can get together multiple different groups.

Drew Allar & James Franklin Press Conference Hour

Drew Allar and James Franklin take the stage to explain what went wrong against Ohio State, Oregon (twice), Notre Dame, Michigan, Northwestern, UCLA, and pretty much any big team ever.
