Penn State Baseball Loses Two Of Three Against Richmond

Penn State Baseball (2-4, 0-0 Big Ten) lost two of three games during its away series against Richmond (5-3, 0-0 A10). Penn State took home the first game with a strong showing on both sides of the ball, highlighted by six scoreless innings from Collin Fitzgerald and two home runs from Spencer Barnett.
After their success in game one, the Nittany Lions struggled to get anything going on offense during the Saturday doubleheader. A fourth game was scheduled for Sunday but was cancelled due to weather concerns.
Game One
Penn State started the series strong with a dominant win in game one. Fitzgerald got the start for the Nittany Lions and held the Spiders scoreless through six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Barnett homered to put Penn State up by one. The Nittany Lions added two more in the sixth on an RBI single by Bryce Molinaro and a sacrifice fly by Jack Porter.
In the seventh, Barnett launched his second home run of the game to put the Nittany Lions up 4-0. Jayden Davis added to the lead with an RBI double in the eighth, and Penn State took game one 5-0.
Game Two
Ben Hudson took the mound for the Nittany Lions in game two of the series. Hudson kept the Spiders scoreless through the first two innings, but Richmond scored twice in the third on an error by Molinaro and a sacrifice fly from Michael Elko.
The Spiders added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Noah Haught
Ben DeMell came on to pitch for Penn State in the fifth inning and shut down the Spiders’ offense. DeMell allowed just two hits and a walk through four scoreless innings.
The Nittany Lions’ offense could not get anything going, and the Spiders took game two, 3-0. Penn State had just four hits in the loss.
Game Three
Penn State started the final game of the series with two scoreless innings from Isaiah Shayter. Richmond got to Shayter in the third, scoring two on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Dosenbach and a home run by Dylan Winebrenner.
The Nittany Lions struck back in the fourth inning. Kevin Karstetter smacked an RBI double to shrink the Spider lead to one.
From there, Richmond led 2-1 until the eighth inning. Porter launched a homer to tie the game at two.
Richmond took the lead back in the bottom of the frame when Winebrenner hit his second long ball of the night. The Spiders added another run when Khris Morris hit a home run of his own. Penn State went into the ninth inning down by two.
It looked like the Nittany Lions might have had a comeback in them when Michael Anderson homered to make it 4-3, but that was all Penn State could do in the 9th, and the game ended with Richmond on top.
