Penn State Men’s Hockey’s Gavin McKenna Named Big Ten First Star Of The Week

Coming off a dominant weekend sweep of Ohio State, Penn State men’s hockey freshman Gavin McKenna was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week, announced Tuesday morning.

McKenna earns his fourth weekly accolade of the season and his second First Star honor, as Penn State has now seen eight different players combine for 14 weekly conference awards this year.

The Whitehorse, Yukon, native led the Nittany Lions with a national-best 10 points on two goals and eight assists. McKenna made program history on Friday night, recording eight points on seven assists and a goal in an 11-4 victory. His efforts helped Penn State set a program record for goals in a Big Ten game and tie its overall single-game scoring record of 11. Five of McKenna’s seven assists were primary.

His eight-point outing also marked the most points in an NCAA Division I game since 1987, with his seven assists being the most in a Division I game since 1983. His seven assists also stand alone as the most ever recorded by a Big Ten player.

McKenna followed up his historic Friday performance with another multi-point effort Saturday, tallying an assist and scoring the overtime game-winner in a 5-4 win. The performance marked his 12th multi-point game of the season.

The freshman is now tied for the Big Ten scoring lead with 33 points (10 goals, 23 assists) in 20 Big Ten games. His 43 points total rank second all-time among Penn State freshmen, sitting just four shy of Denis Smirnov’s program-leading 47 during the 2016-17 season.

His 30 assists rank second in the Big Ten and tied for third nationally while also matching Aiden Fink’s single season record set last year. McKenna leads all Big Ten freshmen in scoring and ranks second nationally among first-year players.

Penn State hits the road this weekend, traveling to South Bend, Indiana, to face Notre Dame. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.
