Penn State Softball Invitational Cancelled As Part Of Schedule Changes

Penn State softball will no longer host the Penn State Softball Invitational from March 5-8 due to projected inclement weather and will instead go down to Salem, Virginia, to participate in the Hokie Invite that weekend, the team announced on Wednesday.
The Nittany Lions were originally scheduled to host Lehigh, Binghamton, Colgate, and Niagara in the five-team, 12-game invitational that would’ve run next Thursday through Sunday, but the decision was made to cancel the series due to rain being in the early forecast. This pushes back the team’s home opener to Friday, March 20, against Wisconsin.
Instead, the Nittany Lions will play four games at the Hokie Invite from March 6-7, facing off with Radford, Boston College, James Madison, and the hosts, Virginia Tech.
Radford, hailing from the Big South, currently sits at 2-8 after losing its eighth consecutive game on Sunday. That game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
Boston College, from the ACC, is 5-10. The two teams have already battled this season, with the Nittany Lions winning 7-0 at the Clearwater Classic on February 6. The encore is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
James Madison, from the Sun Belt, sits at 6-6, but four of those losses came against teams ranked in the top 15. That game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.
Virginia Tech, also from the ACC, is off to the fastest start, sitting at 11-2 and ranked No. 11 in the nation in the NFCA/USA Today rankings. That game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.
Penn State softball is off to one of the best starts in program history, receiving votes in the NFCA/USA Today rankings and even sitting as high as No. 24 on the D1Softball rankings after their 13-2 start to the season. They head to the Tennessee Invitational this weekend, starting with a game against NC Central at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 27.
